Many people consider her one of Brazil's most important writers. Her first book, Poemas dos Becos de Goiás e Estórias Mais, was published in June 1965.

For most of her life, Cora worked as a baker in a small shop. She used her experiences of living in the Brazilian countryside to write beautiful poems and stories. Her writing often showed what life was like for people in the small towns of the Goiás state.

About Cora Coralina

Anna Lins dos Guimarães Peixoto Bretas used the pen name Cora Coralina. She was born on August 20, 1889, in the city of Goiás. She grew up near the River Assunção and always felt a strong connection to her hometown. Her father, Francisco de Paula Lins dos Guimarães Peixoto, was a respected judge.

Cora started writing poems when she was about 14 years old. She also joined a literary club in her town.

Her Life and Work

Later, Cora got married and moved to São Paulo. There, she raised six children. Besides taking care of her family, she continued to work as a baker, making special cakes. Her family and work kept her very busy. Even so, she kept writing.

It wasn't until the mid-1960s that she started publishing her works. She was 75 years old when her husband passed away. Her first published book was Poemas dos Becos de Goiás e Estórias Mais. After her husband's death, she also spent time working on a small farm.

She is especially known for writing about women's lives and the state of Goiás. She also wrote about the challenges faced by people in northeastern Brazil. Her poetry often brought together the many different cultures of Brazil.

Many of her books have been printed more than ten times. They are still popular today, even years after her death. Several books of her collected writings and personal stories have also been published after she passed away.

Awards and Tributes

In 1984, the Brazilian Union of Writers honored her as the "literary personality of the year." Carlos Drummond de Andrade, a famous Brazilian poet, praised her work. He said her poems were like "running waters" and had the "power and delicacy of the natural world."

Cora Coralina's family home in the city of Goiás is now a museum. She lived there as a child and returned to live there in her later years until she died in 1985. The house is located by the bridge over the Vermelho River. It is an old 18th-century house and inspired some of her most beautiful poems.
