The Cordillera Central is the highest mountain range in the Dominican Republic. It is also the tallest mountain range in the entire Caribbean region. This impressive range runs right through the middle of the island of Hispaniola.

What is the Cordillera Central?

The Cordillera Central is home to the highest mountains in the Caribbean. The tallest peak is Pico Duarte, which stands at 3,098 meters (10,164 feet) high. Other very tall mountains here include La Pelona (3,094 meters or 10,150 feet) and La Rucilla (3,049 meters or 10,003 feet).

This mountain range connects to the smaller Massif du Nord in Haiti. From there, it gently curves southwards. It finally ends near the town of San Cristóbal. This town is located on the Caribbean coastal plains.

Because of its high altitude, cool temperatures, and amazing views, the Cordillera Central has a special nickname. People often call it the "Dominican Alps."

Exploring Parks in the Mountains

One important area within the Cordillera Central is the José Armando Bermúdez National Park. This park helps protect many different kinds of plants and animals. It is a very important place for nature.

For example, the park is home to the pale magnolia tree. This beautiful tree is an endangered species. It only grows naturally in the Dominican Republic.

Other Mountain Ranges in the Dominican Republic

In the southwest part of the Dominican Republic, there are two other mountain ranges. These ranges are mostly dry and rocky. They are located south of the Cordillera Central.

The more northern of these two ranges is called the Sierra de Neiba. To the south, you will find the Sierra de Bahoruco. This range is actually a continuation of the Massif de la Selle from Haiti.
