Cosmo Alexander Richard Nevill (born July 14, 1907 – died September 19, 2002) was an important officer in the British Army. He reached the rank of Major General. Nevill fought in World War II and later led a large army group called the 2nd Division. He received several special awards for his service, including the Distinguished Service Order.
Military Career
Cosmo Nevill went to Harrow School and then to the Royal Military College Sandhurst. This is where officers for the British Army are trained. In 1927, he officially became an officer in a group called the Royal Fusiliers.
From 1932, Nevill served in India. During World War II, he fought in Burma. Later, he was part of the famous Normandy landings in Europe. He was the leader, or Commanding Officer, of the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment.
His battalion successfully captured a German gun battery at Longues-sur-Mer. They also took 120 enemy soldiers as prisoners. For his bravery and leadership during this action, Nevill was given the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). This is a very important award for officers in the British armed forces.
After the war, Nevill worked at the United Nations in New York. He was part of the Military Staff Committee. In 1950, he became the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers in Germany.
He then led the 6th Infantry Brigade from 1951. Later, in 1954, he became the Commandant of the School of Infantry at Warminster. His final job was leading the 2nd Infantry Division starting in 1956. He retired from the army in 1960.
After leaving the army, Cosmo Nevill became a respected oil painter.

In 1934, Cosmo Nevill married Grania Goodliffe. They had a son and a daughter together.
