Cottleville has a long and interesting history, making it one of the oldest towns in St. Charles County. It was first settled in 1798 by Captain Warren G. Cottle. He received a special land grant from Spain, which ruled the area at that time.
For a while, not many people lived there. Things started to change in 1810 when the John Pitman family arrived. Captain Cottle passed away in 1811. His son, Dr. Warren G. Cottle Jr., then took over the family farmlands. Dr. Cottle was a farmer and sometimes worked as a doctor.
Later, Dr. Cottle's son, Lorenzo, inherited 200 acres of land. In 1839, Lorenzo divided this land into smaller pieces and officially named the town "Cottleville." He named it after his father and grandfather. Before this, the small village was sometimes called Dardenne or Pin Hook.
Some of the very first settlers in the area included George Huffman, Aaron Rutger, Nathaniel Simons, and Nicholas Contz. A post office opened in Cottleville in 1843, helping the town grow. Captain Lorenzo Cottle, who named the town, was also a soldier. He fought in important conflicts like the Black Hawk War and the Seminole Wars.
