Couderay is a small village in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located along the Couderay River. In 2010, the village had a population of 88 people. Couderay is part of the larger Town of Couderay.
One interesting spot in Couderay is "The Hideout." This place was once a secret getaway for Al Capone, a famous figure from history. Today, it is a popular tourist site. In 2010, the Lac Courte Oreilles Indian Tribe bought "The Hideout."

What's in a Name?
The name "Couderay" comes from French words. It is a shorter version of "courtes oreilles" which means "short ears." This name was given by French explorers and French-Canadian trappers. They traveled through the northern parts of what was then French Louisiana and the Great Lakes area. The name was used to describe the Ojibwa people who lived there.
Couderay's Location and Weather
Couderay is a small village in terms of size. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers about 0.98 square miles (2.57 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Extreme Temperatures
Couderay is known for its very cold winters. On February 2 and February 4, 1996, the temperature dropped to an amazing −55 °F (−48 °C). This was the coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Wisconsin.

Village Population in 2010
In 2010, the census showed that 88 people lived in Couderay. These people lived in 35 households, and 20 of these were families. The village had about 91.7 people per square mile. There were 51 homes in total.
Most of the people in the village (73.9%) were White. About 12.5% were Native American. A small number (1.1%) were from other racial backgrounds, and 12.5% were from two or more races. About 1.1% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Out of the 35 households, 20% had children under 18 living there. More than half (57.1%) were married couples living together. About 28.6% of households were made up of single individuals. Some of these individuals (14.3%) were 65 years old or older and lived alone. On average, each household had 2.29 people, and each family had 2.80 people.
The average age of people in the village was 45.5 years. About 15.9% of residents were under 18. About 4.5% were between 18 and 24 years old. The largest group, 34.2%, was between 45 and 64 years old. About 17% of the population was 65 years or older. There were slightly more males (55.7%) than females (44.3%) in the village.
