History of Courtland
The first people settled in Courtland in 1885. Before that, there was a post office in a nearby town called Prospect, which opened in 1878. This post office later moved to Courtland in 1888.
The city was named after Cortland, New York. Some people think it might also be named after Courtland, a city in Minnesota with the same spelling.
In 1887, a railway company called Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a train line through Courtland. This line connected to other towns like Neva and Superior. Later, in 1996, this railway company joined with another one and became the BNSF Railway. Even today, many local people still call it the "Santa Fe" railway.
Courtland officially became a city in 1892.

Before the schools combined, Courtland High School's mascot was the Courtland Tigers. The Tigers won a state championship in boys' indoor track and field in 1961!
