Courtney Hunt (born 1964) is an American film director and screenwriter. She is famous for directing Frozen River. This movie won a big award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. It was also nominated for two Academy Awards, which are very important film awards.

Early Life and Education

Courtney Hunt grew up in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. She was raised by her single mother. Hunt went to The Field School in Washington, D.C.. After that, she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College.

She then followed her mother's path and studied law at Northeastern University. However, she soon realized that law was not her passion. In 1994, she graduated from Columbia University in New York with a degree in film.

Even though she didn't become a lawyer, her law studies helped her see the world differently. She learned about dialogue and different points of view from legal documents. This knowledge helped her a lot when writing screenplays. Soon after film school, Hunt started to develop the story for Frozen River. She did a lot of research on the Mohawk people for this film.

Courtney Hunt's Film Career

Courtney Hunt is known for both writing and directing movies. She wants filmmakers to see her as someone who can handle both roles well.

About Frozen River

Hunt directed and wrote the screenplay for Frozen River in 2008. The film stars Melissa Leo, Misty Upham, and Charlie McDermott. Frozen River received two nominations at the 81st Academy Awards. Courtney Hunt was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Melissa Leo was nominated for Best Actress.

Frozen River started as a short film. It first showed in 2004 at the New York Film Festival. Developing and writing the movie took a long time for Hunt. She began writing it after college but put it aside. She felt she hadn't found the right way to tell the story yet.

Years later, she turned her idea into a poem. Then she expanded it into a screenplay for a short film. Finally, it became a full-length movie. At first, her idea was about people moving cigarettes across the Canada–US border. But it changed to a story about people helping others cross the border without permission.

Hunt has shared that the film is based on real events. Smugglers sometimes drive across the frozen St. Lawrence River. She believes the film shows people in rural communities that might be forgotten. Frozen River was an independent film. It did well at the box office in the United States, France, and Spain. The film's release was delayed by a few years. This was due to the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. Hunt felt that people might not understand the characters' situations at that time.

Directing The Whole Truth

In 2016, Courtney Hunt directed The Whole Truth. This is a thriller movie. It stars Keanu Reeves, Renée Zellweger, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gabriel Basso, and Jim Belushi. In the film, Keanu Reeves plays a defense attorney. The story follows a court case about a murder. Originally, Skyfall actor Daniel Craig was supposed to star. But he left the project, and Reeves took the lead role.

Personal Life and Views

Courtney Hunt is married to Donald Harwood. He helped raise almost $1 million to fund the movie Frozen River. She also has a daughter.

Hunt has spoken about women in the film industry. She believes it can be hard for women to become directors. She feels it is often easier for women to take on smaller roles on a film set.

Hunt has mentioned that Argentinean director Lucrecia Martel inspires her. She met Martel at the Sundance Film Festival. Hunt has also said that the movie Paper Moon was an influence on her work.
