Early Life and Learning Journey
Courtney Hunt grew up in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee, raised by her single mother. She went to The Field School in Washington, D.C. and then to Sarah Lawrence College. After that, she studied law at Northeastern University, following her mother's path.
However, Courtney soon realized that law wasn't what she wanted to do. In 1994, she graduated from Columbia University in New York, where she studied film. Even though she didn't become a lawyer, her law studies gave her a new way of looking at the world. She once shared that law school gave her chances to work for a federal judge and a criminal defense firm. These experiences helped her understand how people talk and different points of view, which was useful for writing movie scripts. Soon after finishing film school, Hunt started to develop the story for Frozen River. She did a lot of research about the Mohawk people for the film.
Courtney Hunt's Film Career
Courtney Hunt is known for both writing and directing movies. She wants filmmakers to see her as someone who can handle both roles well.
Making Frozen River
In 2008, Courtney Hunt directed and wrote the script for Frozen River. The movie starred Melissa Leo, Misty Upham, and Charlie McDermott. Frozen River received two nominations at the 81st Academy Awards. Courtney Hunt was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, and Melissa Leo was nominated for Best Actress.
Frozen River actually started as a short film. It first showed in 2004 at the New York Film Festival. Developing and writing the movie took a long time for Hunt. She began writing it after college but put it aside because she felt she hadn't found the right way to tell the story yet. Many years later, she turned her first idea into a poem, then a short film script, and finally a full-length movie.
Her first idea for the story was about the Mohawk people moving cigarettes across the Canada–US border. But it changed to a story about people helping others cross the border from Canada into America. Hunt has said that the movie is based on a real situation where people drive across the frozen St. Lawrence River. She believes this film helps show people what life is like in rural communities that might be forgotten. Frozen River was an independent film that did very well in movie theaters in the United States, France, and Spain. The film's release was delayed for a few years because of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. She didn't want to release the film then because she thought people might not understand or feel for the characters.
Directing The Whole Truth
In 2016, Courtney Hunt directed The Whole Truth. This thriller movie starred Keanu Reeves, Renée Zellweger, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gabriel Basso, and Jim Belushi. In the film, Keanu Reeves plays a defense attorney who works on a murder court case. The movie was originally going to star Daniel Craig, but he left the project, and then Keanu Reeves took on the main role.
Personal Life and Views
Courtney Hunt is married to Donald Harwood. He helped raise almost $1 million to fund the movie Frozen River. Courtney also has a daughter.
When it comes to women in the film industry, Hunt believes that women can sometimes be discouraged from becoming directors. She feels it can be easier for women to take on smaller roles on a film set instead of leading as a director.
Who Inspires Courtney Hunt?
Courtney Hunt has shared that Argentinean director Lucrecia Martel is a filmmaker who inspires her. She met Martel at the Sundance Film Festival. Hunt has also mentioned the movie Paper Moon as an influence on her work.
