What's in a Name?
The name Cowabbie has a really interesting story! It comes from the local Aboriginal people. When they first saw cows in the area, they used an expression that sounded like "Cowabbie." This is how the place got its name. There is still a working farm in the area called Cowabbie Station.
A Bit of History: The Church
Cowabbie has a special connection to the Presbyterian church. The community built a church a long time ago.
The Original Church Building
The first church building was built by the Hannah family in 1865. This was a very long time ago! It was originally built in a different spot.
Moving the Church
In 1926, the church building was moved to where it stands today. Imagine moving an entire building! People used a team of bullocks (strong male cows) to pull the church to its new location. Today, the old church building is not used anymore. However, it is still an important memorial for the small community around it.
