Exploring Cranmoor's Land
Cranmoor covers a total area of about 42.3 square miles (109.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 36.7 square miles (95.2 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 5.6 square miles (14.5 square kilometers), is water. This means a good part of the town is made up of lakes, rivers, or marshes.
Cranmoor's Past
Early Land Surveys
Some parts of southern Cranmoor were first mapped out in 1839. This happened early because these areas were close to the Wisconsin River. They were also part of a special "Indian strip" of land. This land was sold by the Menominee people to the U.S. government in 1836. This sale was part of an agreement called the Treaty of the Cedars.
Mapping the Area in 1851
In the winter of 1851 and 1852, a team of surveyors worked for the U.S. government. They mapped all the corners of the land that would become Cranmoor. They walked through the forests and likely crossed frozen marshes. They used special tools like a Gunter's chain for measuring and a Solar compass to find directions.
After their work, the lead surveyor wrote a description of the area. He said that most of this six-mile square area was covered by marsh or swamp. He noted that only a small part, less than two sections, could be used for farming. These farming spots were tiny, not more than 20 acres each.
He also described a very thick swamp with black alders. This swamp was hard to get through. The swamp had tamarack and small Spruce trees. The water in the swamp was from 6 to 20 inches deep. The open marsh areas had light grass and water from 12 to 40 inches deep. He also mentioned many small islands scattered around. The edges of these islands were full of cranberries. This is probably how Cranmoor got its name!
When Cranmoor Became a Town
The Town of Cranmoor was officially created in 1903. It got its name from the community of Cranmoor, which was already there.
