Craugastor uno is a special kind of frog that lives only in Mexico. It's found in the mountains of Guerrero and southern Oaxaca. People sometimes call it the Savage's robber frog or the strange robber frog. The name uno means "one" in Spanish. This name was chosen because this frog was thought to be very unique when it was first discovered. It belongs to a family of frogs called Craugastoridae.

What Does Craugastor uno Look Like?

The first Craugastor uno frog ever studied was a female. She was about 63 mm (2.5 in) long from her snout (nose) to her vent (bottom). This frog looks strong and sturdy. It has a wide head and its legs are quite short.

You can see its eardrum, called the tympanum, which is shaped like an oval. Its fingers and toes have clear, round pads called discs. The toes also have a little bit of webbing, which is skin between the toes.

The color of these frogs can change a lot. Frogs from Guerrero might be brown, grey, or orange. But frogs from Oaxaca are usually tan or pink. Their patterns also vary. However, all Craugastor uno frogs have three pairs of black spots on their back, a white stripe down the middle of their back, and stripes on their upper lip. Their skin has small bumps called pustules. These bumps can be tiny or large, making the skin look either smooth or bumpy.

Where Does Craugastor uno Live?

Craugastor uno lives in damp pine-oak forests. These forests are found in mountains at heights between 1,550–2,295 m (5,085–7,530 ft) above sea level. This means they live high up in the mountains.

Why Is This Frog in Danger?

Sadly, the Craugastor uno frog is facing threats. Its home, the forest, is shrinking. This is happening because of deforestation, which means trees are being cut down. People cut down trees for logging (to get wood), for agriculture (to make farms), and for urban encroachment (when cities and towns expand into natural areas). Losing their habitat makes it harder for these unique frogs to survive.
