The Craugastor xucanebi is a special kind of frog. It belongs to a family of frogs called Craugastoridae. This frog is found only in one country: Guatemala. When an animal is found only in one specific place, it is called endemic. This means the Craugastor xucanebi lives nowhere else in the world!

Where This Frog Lives

This unique frog lives in the central highlands of Guatemala. You can find it in mountain ranges like Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, Sierra de Xucaneb, and Sierra de las Minas.

Its natural habitat is in forests that are found on mountainsides. These are called premontane and montane forests. The frog lives at heights between 600 and 1,300 meters (about 2,000 to 4,300 feet) above sea level. It usually hides in bushes and undergrowth. You might also spot it in forests that have been slightly changed by people.

Why This Frog Is in Danger

Sadly, the Craugastor xucanebi frog is facing threats. Its biggest problem is habitat loss. This means the places where it lives are disappearing.

Here are some reasons why its habitat is shrinking:

  • Farms are expanding: People are clearing forests to make more land for farming. This is called agricultural encroachment.
  • Wood is being taken: Trees are cut down for wood, which removes the frog's home.
  • More homes are built: As more people move into the area, they build houses and towns. This also takes away forest land.

These activities make it harder for the Craugastor xucanebi to survive.
