Crawford is a ghost town located in Rice County, Kansas, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have moved away, leaving behind empty buildings. Crawford is found in Galt and Odessa Townships. It lies along K-4, about 6 miles (10 km) east of Geneseo.
A Look Back in Time
For thousands of years, the land that is now Kansas was home to many Native American tribes. These groups lived off the land and built their communities here.
Kansas Becomes a State
In 1803, the United States bought a huge area of land called the Louisiana Purchase. This purchase included most of what is now Kansas. Later, in 1854, the Kansas Territory was officially set up. This was a big step towards becoming a state. Finally, in 1861, Kansas became the 34th U.S. state.
Rice County and Crawford
Rice County, where Crawford is located, was created in 1867. This meant the area was becoming more organized.
Crawford itself had a post office for many years. A post office is a very important part of a town. It helps people send and receive mail, connecting them to the rest of the world. Crawford's post office was open from the 1880s until 1953. After the post office closed, fewer people lived in Crawford, and it slowly became a ghost town.
