History of Geneseo
For thousands of years, the land that is now Kansas was home to Native American tribes. In 1803, the United States bought most of this land as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Kansas became a U.S. territory in 1854. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially joined the United States as the 34th state. Rice County was created in 1867.
The city of Geneseo was founded in 1886. It was named after another city, Geneseo, Illinois.

Geneseo used to have its own high school. It was called Geneseo High School, and its mascot was the Geneseo Dragons. This school closed in 1980 as part of a school unification plan.
Local Media
Geneseo has had a local newspaper for many years. It was first known as the Geneseo Herald from 1887 to 1899. Later, it became the Geneseo Post for a short time. From 1979 to 1983, it was called Geneseo Galaxy.
Notable People from Geneseo
- John S. Gibson, Jr. - He was one of the youngest mayors in the country. Later, he moved to California and became a member of the Los Angeles City Council.
