History of Crawfordsville

Crawfordsville got its name from the Crawford family, who were early settlers in the area.

This city is famous for a special meeting that happened in February 1854. People who used to be part of the Whig Party met privately in Crawfordsville. They were planning to create a brand new political group. This meeting helped lay the foundation for what would become the Republican Party. The first public meeting for this new party took place about a month later in Ripon, Wisconsin.
