A Look at Crescent City's Past
Train Accident in 1970
On June 21, 1970, a train from the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railroad Company had an accident in downtown Crescent City. One of the train cars, which was carrying propane, broke open. This caused explosions and fires that destroyed many buildings in the village center. Homes and businesses were lost.
Luckily, no one died in the accident. However, more than 60 firefighters and other people were hurt. This event was later shown on a TV show called Destroyed in Seconds on the Discovery Channel.
Changes to the High School
For many years, Crescent-Iroquois High School was the main high school for students in the village. But in 2009, the high school closed down. This meant that students finishing 8th grade had to go to high schools in nearby towns.
After the high school closed, the building was used for special education programs. This continued until around 2019, when those programs moved to Gilman, Illinois. In May 2022, the local school board decided to tear down the old high school building.
Starting with the 2023-2024 school year, the elementary school became a K-5 school. This means it now teaches students from kindergarten through 5th grade. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grades were moved to other schools.
