Cressey is a small community in Merced County, California. It's a special type of place called a census-designated place, or CDP. This means it's a community that the government counts for population, but it's not officially a city or town.
Cressey is about 6 miles (10 km) north of Atwater. It sits at an elevation of 167 feet (51 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 366 people lived in Cressey.
This community is in the northern part of Merced County. It's near where the Santa Fe railroad crosses the Merced River. Other nearby towns include Ballico to the northwest and Livingston to the southwest. Winton is to the southeast. The local ZIP Code is 95312, and the area code for phones is 209.
History of Cressey
The area first had a post office in 1882. It was called Cressy back then. It closed for a short time but reopened in 1909. In 1912, its name officially changed to Cressey.
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway named the town. They named it after Calvin J. Cressey. He was a local landowner in the area.
Today, the Merced County Sheriffs Office helps keep the community safe. Cressey also has one elementary school. It's part of the Ballico-Cressey School District and teaches students from kindergarten to second grade.
Geography of Cressey
Cressey covers an area of about 1.8 square miles (4.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There are no large bodies of water within its boundaries.
To the north of Cressey, across the Merced River, you'll find the area known as Ballico. If you go south of Cressey, past Palm Avenue, you enter the Winton area. To the west, beyond the Santa Fe Rail Road, is Livingston. And to the east, off Cressey Way onto Meadow Drive, is also considered Winton.
