Upper Geyser Basin

Crested Pool is a really cool hot spring located in the Yellowstone National Park. You can find it in the Upper Geyser Basin. This spring is super deep, about 42 feet (12.8 meters)! It got its name because of the "crest" or rim that goes all around the pool. Even though it's called a spring, Crested Pool can sometimes burst out with water, just like a geyser!

Exploring Crested Pool's Past: How It Got Its Name

Crested Pool has had many different names over the years! Scientists first wrote about it during the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871. This was a big trip to explore the Yellowstone area.

Early Names and Discoveries

In 1872, the Hayden survey team called this hot spring "Fire Basin." A writer named Harry Norton also visited that year. He gave it a fancy name: "Circe's Boudoir."

Between 1872 and 1927, people used many other names for the pool. Some of these included Diana's Spring, Devil's Well, and Pool Beautiful. Imagine trying to keep track of them all!

The Official Name: Crested Pool

Finally, in 1927, a group called the U.S. Board on Geographical Names made it official. They decided on "Crested Pool." This name came from an older map from 1872. That map had called it "Crested Hot Spring."

Remembering Safety: The Andrew Clark Hecht Award

In 1970, a sad accident happened at Crested Pool. A nine-year-old boy, Andrew Clark Hecht, fell into the hot spring. This tragic event led to something important.

To remember Andrew and help keep people safe, a special award was created. It's called the Andrew Clark Hecht Memorial Public Safety Achievement Award. This award is given out every year. It honors a person or group who does the most to improve public safety. The winner also receives $1,000 to help with their work.
