The Story of Cross Hill: A Look Back
Cross Hill started a long time ago where two old Native American trails met. In 1795, the Carter family built an inn at this busy crossroads. This inn became a popular stop for travelers.
By 1837, the small community that grew around the inn was known as "Cross Hill." The town really started to grow when the Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railway arrived in 1890. Cross Hill officially became a town in the same year.

A beautiful spot nearby is Lake Greenwood, which is just to the west of the town. Another important road, South Carolina Highway 72, runs along the northern edge of Cross Hill. The town covers a total area of about 3.1 square miles (8.25 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
