Crucianella (say "kroo-see-uh-NEL-uh"), also known as crossworts, is a group of flowering plants. These plants belong to the family called Rubiaceae. You might know other plants in this family, like coffee!
Crossworts are usually annual herbs. This means they grow from a seed, flower, produce new seeds, and then die, all within one year. They are found in many places, from the sunny lands around the Mediterranean Sea to Central Asia and the Arabian Peninsula.
One type of crosswort, called C. angustifolia, has also started growing in new places. It can now be found in northern California, southern Oregon (in Josephine County), and Idaho (in Clearwater County). When a plant starts growing in a new area where it wasn't originally from, it's called being "naturalized."
