Exploring Crows Landing's Past

Crows Landing was first started near the San Joaquin River. It was a river landing, a place where boats could stop. The community was founded by John Crow. He was born in Missouri in 1830 and moved to California in a covered wagon.

In 1887, Crows Landing moved to its current spot. This move happened so it could be closer to the Southern Pacific Railroad. The railroad helped the community grow and connect with other places. Today, some members of the Crow family still live here. They even run a walnut farm.

The Crows Landing Airport Story

West of the town, there is a small airport called NASA Crows Landing Airport. This airport has an interesting history! During World War II, it was used to train pilots. Later, NASA used it for testing special experimental aircraft. These planes came from the Ames Research Center in Mountain View.

In 2000, Stanislaus County took over the airport. It has been closed since 2011. Since then, it has been used for testing cars, trucks, and even for storing things. In 2022, there were plans to turn the old airfield into a business park.
