The Ctenophryne carpish is a special kind of frog that lives only in Peru. It's a microhylid frog, which means it's part of a family of usually small, round-bodied frogs. This frog is quite rare and not much is known about it.

It was first found in the Cordillera de Carpish mountains in Huánuco Region. It has also been seen near Juanjuí in the San Martín Region. This frog does not have visible eardrums. At first glance, it looks a lot like frogs from the Phrynopus group, which is why it was first placed in that group.

Meet the Carpish Frog: What Does It Look Like?

This little frog has some unique features. Male Ctenophryne carpish are about 29 millimeters (a bit over an inch) long. Females are a bit larger, measuring about 34 to 35 millimeters (around 1.3 to 1.4 inches) from their snout to their rear end.

Body Shape and Skin

The Carpish frog has a sturdy body and a short head. Its eyes are quite large. Interestingly, it doesn't have an outer eardrum, which is called a tympanum. The skin on its back is smooth if it's a female. But if it's a male, the skin on its back is slightly bumpy.

Colors and Feet

The back of the frog is black with cool green patches. Its belly is also black, but it has bright orange patches on its throat and chest. The tips of its fingers and toes are a little bit swollen. Its toes also have some webbing at the base and small fringes along the sides.

Where Does the Carpish Frog Live?

The Ctenophryne carpish calls the cloud forests of Peru its home. These forests are very misty and humid. They are found high up in the mountains, at elevations between 2,750 and 2,960 meters (about 9,000 to 9,700 feet) above sea level.

Life in the Forest

This frog spends its life on the ground. It also likes to live inside or near bromeliads. Bromeliads are plants that often grow on trees and collect water in their leaves. The Carpish frog even uses these bromeliads for breeding. Its diet mainly consists of small arthropods, like insects or spiders.

Why Is This Frog Important?

The Ctenophryne carpish is either very rare or very good at hiding. It's hard to find! Sadly, its home is in danger. People are cutting down parts of the cloud forest for farming. They also collect wood for fires. This habitat destruction threatens the survival of this unique frog. Scientists are working to protect its natural home.
