Cuaña (pronounced "KWAH-nya") is a cool town in the Principality of Asturias, Spain. It's right by the Cantabrian Sea in the north. To its south is Boal, to the east are Navia and Villayón (across the Navia River), and to the west is El Franco. It's also known as Coaña in Spanish.

A Look Back: Cuaña's History

Long ago, Cuaña was part of a bigger area called Navia – Eo. In 1154, a king named Alfonso VII gave this land to the Bishop of Oviedo. It was then known as Castropol.

How Cuaña Became Independent

In 1581, something big happened for Cuaña. The people living there bought their freedom from Philip II. He was the owner of Castropol at the time. This purchase made Cuaña its own independent town!

War and Its Impact

Later, Cuaña faced tough times during the Peninsular War. This was a big conflict when French troops invaded Spain. Some villages in Cuaña, like Coaña, Folgueras, and Mohías, were sadly raided during this war.

What are Cuaña's Parishes?

A parish is like a smaller area or district within a municipality. Cuaña has several parishes that make up the whole area:

  • Cartavio
  • Cuaña
  • Folgueiras
