The Cuban boa (Chilabothrus angulifer) is a very large species of snake found in Cuba. People in Cuba sometimes call it maja de Santa María. It belongs to the family Boidae, which includes other large snakes like pythons.
Cuban boas can grow to be over 5 m (16 ft) long. They are also quite heavy. This makes them one of the biggest snakes in the world! They live only in Cuba and some nearby islands.

What's in a Name?
The scientific name for the Cuban boa is Chilabothrus angulifer. The first part, Chilabothrus, comes from ancient Greek words. Cheilos means "lip," á means "without," and bothros means "pits."
The second part, angulifer, comes from the Latin word angulus, which means "angle." This probably refers to the cool angular shapes you can see in the patterns on the snake's back.
Where Do They Live?
Cuban boas are found all over Cuba. They also live on smaller islands nearby. These include Isla de la Juventud and the Canarreos Archipelago. You can also find them in the Colorados Archipelago and the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago.
Their Home Environment
These snakes like to live in many different kinds of forests. You can find them in rainforests, cloud forests, and evergreen forests. They also live in drier thorn forests and coastal scrub forests.
Cuban boas live from sea level all the way up to 1,214 m (3,983 ft) high. Sometimes, they are even found in sugar cane fields!
What Do They Look Like?
The Cuban boa is the largest snake in the genus Chilabothrus. It has a very strong and thick body. It looks as big as some boas or pythons that are much longer!
How Big Can They Get?
The Cuban boa is the biggest snake in Cuba and the West Indies. Some have been measured at over 5 m (16 ft) long. They can weigh more than 30 kg (66 lb)!
The largest Cuban boa ever measured was 5.65 m (18.5 ft) long. It was thought to weigh over 40 kg (88 lb). Some old reports even mention snakes around 6.4 m (21 ft) long! But usually, they are about 3.66 m (12.0 ft) long.
Their Colors and Patterns
Cuban boas are usually brown. They have a cool pattern of dark brown or black diamond-shaped spots. These spots are staggered, meaning they are not perfectly lined up.
The background color can be yellowish or tan. Sometimes, especially in western Cuba, the dark spots might be lighter brown or pale tan. The tail might have no pattern or up to 12 darker spots.
Special Scales
Cuban boas have special scales on their heads and bodies. These scales help scientists tell them apart from other snakes. For example, the scales around their lips are usually separate from their eyes.
How They Behave
Even though they are very big, Cuban boas are good climbers. They can climb trees quite well! They usually live alone. They only meet up with other boas during the mating season.
What Do They Eat?
The Cuban boa is a top apex predator in Cuba. This means it's at the top of the food chain. It hunts many different animals.
What they eat depends on their size and age. They can eat frogs, lizards, and even other snakes. They also hunt birds like chickens and wild birds. Bats are a favorite meal for them too!
Larger boas can even eat bigger animals like rabbits, hutias (a type of rodent), and rats. Most of their diet (about 96%) is made up of warm-blooded animals like mammals and birds. Only a small part (4%) is cold-blooded animals like reptiles and amphibians.
The most common things they eat are chickens, hutias, bats, and black rats.
How They Have Babies
Cuban boas are viviparous. This means the mother gives birth to live young, not eggs. Female boas usually have babies every two years. They need to be at least five years old to start having babies.
The mating season is usually from April to June. The mother carries her babies for about 150 to 180 days. Babies are usually born in September or October. A mother can have anywhere from 2 to 22 babies at a time.
Bigger mothers tend to have more babies, and their babies are usually larger. Newborn Cuban boas are quite big compared to other snakes. They can be over 50 cm (20 in) long and weigh over 80 g (0.18 lb)!
Growing Up
Male Cuban boas are ready to breed when they are about three years old. Females take longer, becoming ready at around five years old. Boas kept in zoos or other captive environments might grow larger before they start breeding.
How Long Do They Live?
In the wild, Cuban boas can live for more than 30 years! Scientists are still studying how many babies they can have over their lifetime. In zoos, some Cuban boas have continued to have babies even when they were over 30 years old.
Conservation Status
The Cuban boa was classified as "Least Concern" (LC) in 2021. This means that, for now, their population is stable and not at high risk of disappearing.
