Cubulco's History
Before the Spanish Arrived
Long ago, a family chief from the aj K'ub'ul group moved away. He wanted to find peaceful and fertile land. This new place eventually became modern Cubulco. The K'iche' king was worried about this. He sent soldiers to watch the aj K'ub'ul family. The king feared they might team up with other groups. He thought they might form an army to attack the K'iche' people.
The soldiers settled east of the aj K'ub'ul. But they found the aj K'ub'ul were very peaceful. They just worked on their land and enjoyed their families. They did not want to fight. The soldiers reported this back to the K'iche' king. They told him not to worry. Over time, the K'iche' warriors liked this peaceful life. They went back home to get their own families. Then, they moved to where they had watched the aj K'ub'ul. They started a new, peaceful community there.
Peaceful Conversion by Friars
In 1537, a friar named Bartolomé de las Casas came to Guatemala. He was part of the Dominican Order. He wanted to teach Christianity in a new way. His idea was to treat everyone as equals. He believed people should choose to become Christian. This choice should come from understanding the faith.
Las Casas wanted to test his method without soldiers. He chose an area where there were no colonies. The native people there were known for being fierce. The governor of Guatemala agreed to let him try. If it worked, no new land would be taken from the natives. Las Casas and his friars set up churches. They reached towns like Rabinal and Cobán, including Cubulco.
Because of their efforts, this area changed. It was once called the "Land of War." But it became known as "Verapaz," meaning "True Peace." Las Casas's plan was clever. He taught Christian songs to native merchants. These merchants then traveled into the area. They sang the songs and shared the message. This helped convert several native chiefs. They built churches in the area now called Alta Verapaz. Cubulco's Catholic church was built around 1540. It was named after Saint James.
Becoming a Municipality
In 1846, Cubulco was officially made a municipality. This means it became its own local government area. By 1850, just four years later, Cubulco had about 4,000 people living there.
Cubulco's People
Most people in Cubulco are Achi Maya. They are Native Americans. They speak the Achi Maya language.
