Cumberland is a small, quiet community in Maurice River Township. It is part of Cumberland County in the state of New Jersey. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town.
Cumberland is mostly a residential area with homes and lots of nature. You'll find most of its few hundred houses along Route 49 and Hesstown/Port Elizabeth-Cumberland Road. The community is surrounded by other towns like Millville, Port Elizabeth, and Estell Manor.

History of Cumberland
Cumberland grew up around an old iron furnace in the 1800s. This furnace was called the Cumberland Iron Furnace.
Cumberland Pond
In 1810, a dam was built on the Manumuskin River at the western edge of Cumberland. This created what is now known as Cumberland Pond. The pond was first made to provide power for the iron furnace, which is no longer there. Today, Cumberland Pond is a popular spot for outdoor activities. People enjoy fishing, canoeing, and watching birds there. It's a beautiful part of New Jersey's natural environment.
Education
