Cumberland is a small, quiet community in Maurice River Township. It is part of Cumberland County in the state of New Jersey. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town.

Cumberland is mostly a residential area with homes and lots of nature. You'll find most of its few hundred houses along Route 49 and Hesstown/Port Elizabeth-Cumberland Road. The community is surrounded by other towns like Millville, Port Elizabeth, and Estell Manor.

About Cumberland

Cumberland is a very rural place. It has only a couple of small shops. Many people who live here travel to nearby towns for work. These towns include Millville, Vineland, and Bridgeton.

Nature and Wildlife

A large part of Cumberland is covered by the Peaslee Wildlife Management Area. This is New Jersey's second-biggest game reserve. It's a special place where animals and plants are protected.

Local Services

Cumberland is home to the Cumberland United Methodist Church and its graveyard. You can also find a station for the New Jersey Department of Roads and Highways here. The community is protected by the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Company. They help keep everyone safe.

Finding Cumberland on a Map

Cumberland is a bit tricky to find on maps. This is because it doesn't have its own specific boundaries. It also doesn't have its own ZIP Code. Mail for Cumberland goes through the Millville Post Office, using the 08332 ZIP code. Because of this, many people who have lived in Cumberland County their whole lives don't even know Cumberland exists!

The exact number of people living in Cumberland is not known. This is because the United States Census Bureau does not count the populations of very small settlements within Maurice River Township separately. However, based on the number of homes the local fire company serves, it's estimated there are about 200 households in Cumberland.

History of Cumberland

Cumberland grew up around an old iron furnace in the 1800s. This furnace was called the Cumberland Iron Furnace.

Cumberland Pond

In 1810, a dam was built on the Manumuskin River at the western edge of Cumberland. This created what is now known as Cumberland Pond. The pond was first made to provide power for the iron furnace, which is no longer there. Today, Cumberland Pond is a popular spot for outdoor activities. People enjoy fishing, canoeing, and watching birds there. It's a beautiful part of New Jersey's natural environment.

Education

Students in the Cumberland area attend schools in the Maurice River Township School District.
