Cwmdauddwr is a small village in Powys, Wales. It sits right next to the town of Rhayader, with the River Wye flowing between them. You can find Cwmdauddwr on the B4518 road, which connects Rhayader to the beautiful Elan Valley Reservoirs.
The name Cwmdauddwr comes from an old Welsh term, Cwmwd Deuddwr, which means "commote of the two waters." A commote was a type of old Welsh district or area. This name makes sense because the village is located where two rivers, the River Elan and the River Wye, meet. This area was also sometimes called Elenydd.
In Cwmdauddwr, you'll find a few important places. There's a local pub called The Triangle Inn, a village hall for community events, and a parish church. The church is named after St Bride, also known as Sant Ffraid in Welsh.
The Groe is a large park right by the river. It's a great spot for walks and has areas for playing and sports.
The village once had its own train station, Rhayader railway station. However, it closed down in 1963.
St Bride's Church
The church in Cwmdauddwr, St Bride's, was built during the Victorian era. It stands in a large graveyard. You can still see parts of the foundations of an even older church that used to be on the same spot.
A famous woman named Emmeline Lewis Lloyd is buried here. There's a special plaque in the church that honors her. This plaque was saved from another church, Nantgwyllt, when the Elan Valley was flooded between 1896 and 1905 to create the Caban Coch reservoir. The plaque notes that Emmeline Lewis Lloyd was the eighth woman ever to climb Mont Blanc, a very tall mountain.
