Cynthia Viteri (born 19 November 1965) is an Ecuadorian lawyer, journalist, and politician. She was elected Mayor of Guayaquil, a major city in Ecuador, on March 24, 2019. Her term as mayor started on May 14, 2019. Before becoming mayor, she was a candidate for president in Ecuador's elections in 2006 and 2017. She also served as a member of the National Congress and later the National Assembly for many years.

About Cynthia Viteri's Early Life
Cynthia Viteri was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on November 19, 1965. Her parents are José Viteri Peña and Leonor Jiménez Campuzano.
Cynthia Viteri's Education
She went to Colegio Inmaculada for her first years of school. Later, she studied at Indoamérica de Guayaquil. Cynthia Viteri then attended the University of Guayaquil. There, she earned a degree in social science and politics. She continued her studies at the same university to become a doctor of law.
Cynthia Viteri's Career Path
Before entering politics, Cynthia Viteri worked as a newsreader for a TV station called Telecentro. She then became the public relations manager for Jaime Nebot. He is a leader of the Social Christian Party. Cynthia's sister, Nathalie Viteri, is also a member of the National Assembly for this party.
Cynthia Viteri's Political Journey
Cynthia Viteri began her political career in 1997. She was chosen to be part of the National Constituent Assembly for the Social Christian Party. This group helped create new rules for the country.
Serving in Congress and Assembly
After the Constituent Assembly finished its work in 1998, she was elected to the National Congress. She represented the Guayas Province. Her first term ended in 2003. She was elected again to the National Congress in 2002. From 2005 to 2006, she was the First Vice President of the National Congress.
In 2006, Cynthia Viteri ran for president of Ecuador. She received over 525,000 votes. This was about 9.63% of all the votes.
Her time in the National Congress ended in 2007. This happened when Rafael Correa called for a new group, the Constituent Assembly. This new assembly was created to write a new constitution for Ecuador. Cynthia Viteri was elected to this new assembly. The Constituent Assembly suggested creating a new group called the National Assembly. This new group would replace the old National Congress. People approved this idea in a vote in 2008.
In 2009, Cynthia Viteri ran for the new National Assembly. She was elected to represent the Guayas Province. She was elected again to the National Assembly in 2013. This time, she got a seat for the whole country. The assembly started its work on May 14, 2013. After this election, Cynthia Viteri became the person who had served the longest in Ecuador's legislature.
Mayor of Guayaquil and Challenges
In 2020, during the global health situation, Cynthia Viteri, as mayor, took action at the local airport. She ordered the local police to block the runway. This action meant that some planes bringing people home could not land. The Ecuadorian government expressed concerns about this decision.

Cynthia Viteri is married to Juan Carlos Váscones. They have five children.
