The Cyprus warbler (Curruca melanothorax) is a small bird that lives only on the island of Cyprus. This means it is endemic to Cyprus, found nowhere else in the world for breeding. It's a type of passerine bird, which means it's a perching bird, like many songbirds you might see.

Even though it breeds in Cyprus, this little bird is a short-distance migrant. This means it travels for winter to nearby countries like Israel, Jordan, and Egypt.

What Does the Cyprus Warbler Look Like?

Like many birds in its family, the male and female Cyprus warblers look quite different. This is called having distinct plumage (feathers).

The Male Cyprus Warbler

The adult male Cyprus warbler is a small bird. It has a grey back and a striking black head. You might notice white stripes on its face, near its beak, which look a bit like "moustaches." What makes this bird really special is its chest and belly. They are heavily streaked with black, which is quite unique among similar warblers.

The Female Cyprus Warbler

The female Cyprus warbler looks a bit plainer than the male. She is mostly grey on her back and has a greyer head. Her underside is whitish, but it only has a few light spots, not the heavy black streaks seen on the male.

What Does It Sound Like?

The Cyprus warbler has a very fast and rattling song. If you've ever heard a Sardinian warbler, its song is quite similar.

Where Does the Cyprus Warbler Live?

This bird prefers dry, open areas, especially on hillsides. It likes places with bushes, as these provide good spots for building its nest.

Nesting and Eggs

The Cyprus warbler builds its nest in low shrubs or thorny bushes called gorse. The female usually lays 3 to 5 eggs in the nest.

What Does It Eat?

Like most "warblers," the Cyprus warbler mainly eats insects. However, it will also snack on berries when they are available.
