Darryl Lynn Hughley (born March 6, 1963) is an American actor and stand-up comedian. A stand-up comedian tells jokes and stories to a live audience. Hughley is well-known for hosting `BET`'s ComicView from 1992 to 1993. He also starred in his own TV show, The Hughleys, which was on `ABC` and `UPN`.
He is also famous as one of the "Big Four" comedians in The Original Kings of Comedy. Besides comedy, he hosted `CNN`'s D. L. Hughley Breaks the News. He was also a reporter for The Jay Leno Show on `NBC`. In 2013, D. L. Hughley competed on Dancing with the Stars, finishing in ninth place.

Early Life and Growing Up
Hughley was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. His parents are Audrey and Charles Hughley. Charles worked for `Delta Air Lines`. D. L. Hughley is the second of four children. His family moved to South Central Los Angeles when he was very young.
As a teenager, Hughley faced some challenges and was part of a street group. He was also expelled from San Pedro High School. However, he decided to change his path. He earned his `GED` (General Education Development) certificate. After that, he got a job with the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
Comedy and Television Career
From 1992 to 1993, D. L. Hughley was the first host of ComicView. This was a stand-up comedy show on `BET` (Black Entertainment Television). In 1993, he also appeared on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Will's friend, Keith Campbell.
From 1998 to 2002, Hughley created, produced, and starred in his own TV show called The Hughleys. This sitcom was based on his real-life experiences. It showed his African-American family living in a fancy neighborhood.
In 2005, he released a comedy album titled "D.L. Hughley: Notes From The GED Section". He also had a short talk show on `Comedy Central` called Weekends at the D.L.. He is a member of The Original Kings of Comedy, a group of famous comedians. He also had roles on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and `NBC`'s Scrubs. In 2008, he hosted the `BET Awards`.
In June 2010, Hughley was a special guest host for one day on `ABC`'s The View. He also appeared as a guest star on `TBS`'s Glory Daze. He was a guest host for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Hughley has written several books. His first book, I Want You to Shut the ... Up: How the Audacity of Dopes Is Ruining America, was published in 2012. His second book, Black Man, White House: An Oral History of the Obama Years, came out in 2017. In 2018, he released How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People. His fourth book, Surrender, White People: Our Unconditional Terms for Peace, was published in 2020. His latest book, How to Survive America, was published in 2021.
In 2019, he started hosting a talk show called The D.L. Hughley Show on `TV One`.
Hughley's Work with CNN

Hughley was chosen to host and write a comedy news show on `CNN`. The show was called D. L. Hughley Breaks the News. It covered news about politics, entertainment, sports, and pop culture from around the world. The first episode aired on October 25, 2008.
In March 2009, `CNN` announced that Hughley would stop hosting the show. He wanted to work in Los Angeles to be closer to his family. He continued to work with `CNN` as a contributor from Los Angeles.
Radio Shows
Hughley also has a career as a radio host. In July 2009, The D.L. Hughley Morning Show started on `WRKS` (now `WEPN`), also known as 98.7 Kiss FM, in New York City. His co-host was `BET` news reporter Jacque Reid. The show aired from 6 to 10 am.
In August 2013, `REACH Media` announced a deal with D.L. Hughley. He would host a new nationally syndicated afternoon radio show. This show is also called The D.L. Hughley Show.
Personal Life and Family
D. L. Hughley is married to LaDonna Hughley. They have two daughters, Ryan and Tyler, and a son, Kyle. Hughley has spoken about his son Kyle having Asperger syndrome, which is a type of autism.
In June 2020, Hughley collapsed while performing in Nashville, Tennessee. It was reported that he collapsed due to exhaustion. Later tests showed that he had COVID-19.
