The D River is a very short river located in Lincoln City, Oregon, in the United States. This river was once known as the "shortest river in the world" by Guinness World Records. It was measured at about 440 feet (130 m) long.
The World's Shortest River Contest
For a while, the D River held the record for the shortest river. But in 1989, Guinness World Records gave the title to the Roe River in Montana. This started a fun competition between the two states!
The people of Lincoln City wanted their title back. They sent a new measurement to Guinness, saying the D River was only about 120 feet (37 m) long at "extreme high tide." They even joked that the Roe River was just a "drainage ditch."
Of course, Montana disagreed! They said the D River was just "ocean water backup." They also pointed out that the Roe River had an even shorter part, only 30 feet (9.1 m) long. Guinness never officially decided who was right. Because of this ongoing friendly argument, Guinness stopped listing a "shortest river" in their book after 2006.
Where the D River Flows
The D River starts at Devils Lake. It then flows under U.S. Route 101 and empties into the Pacific Ocean. The entire river is located within the city limits of Lincoln City.
The D River State Recreation Site is a park right off Highway 101. This park is famous for hosting two of the world's biggest kite festivals every summer and fall. It's a great place to see colorful kites flying high!
This area was first called Delake. Later, in 1965, Delake joined with other nearby towns to form Lincoln City. Before it was named the D River, people called it things like "the outlet." It got its unique, short name from a special contest.
