The Daiei, Inc. (or just Daiei) is a big supermarket chain in Japan. It was started in 1957 by Isao Nakauchi in Osaka. Today, Daiei has many stores, selling not just food but also electronics, home items, and clothes. It used to be the biggest store chain in Japan! Now, it's part of the ÆON Co. family, another large Japanese supermarket group. Daiei runs over 3,000 stores across Japan.
The Story of Daiei
Daiei grew very quickly in the 1970s and 1980s. It became a huge name in Japanese shopping. However, other stores like Ito-Yokado and ÆON started to sell more. This made it harder for Daiei to keep its top spot.
Changes to Keep Going
To help the company, Daiei made some big changes. They sold their baseball team, the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks, in 2005. They had owned the team since 1988. They also sold their stores in Hawaii in 2006. These sales helped Daiei get financial support. In 2005, ÆON Co. and other companies helped Daiei get back on track.
Daiei's Own Brands
Daiei sells many products under its own special names. These are called "private label brands." The most famous one is called Topvalu (トップバリュ). Topvalu products started in 2007. You can find Topvalu items at both Daiei and ÆON Co. stores.
