Daliburgh (Scottish Gaelic: Dalabrog) is a small village on South Uist, an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It's known as a crofting township, which means it's a community where people live and farm small plots of land called crofts.

Daliburgh is about one and a half miles west of Lochboisdale. It has the second largest population of any village in South Uist. The village is located where two main roads, the A865 and the B888, meet. Like many places, Daliburgh has changed a lot in recent years.

In 1730, a man named Ranald Macdonald was given the right to manage land in Daliburgh. This was granted to him by the chief of the Clanranald family.

Life in Daliburgh

Daliburgh has a lively community with several important places.

Community Hubs

The South End Community Hall is located on the northern edge of Daliburgh. This hall is a great place for activities. It has a fitness room and indoor sports areas for everyone to enjoy.

Near the Borrodale Hotel, you'll find a special memorial. It remembers Donald J. MacDonald, who was a famous Gaelic bàrd (which means poet). He lived in Daliburgh in the middle of the 20th century.

Schools and Music

Daliburgh School provides primary education for children aged 5 to 12. Next to the school, there's an independent cròileagan. This is a Gaelic term for a nursery or after-school club.

Daliburgh is also famous for its annual summer music school called Ceòlas. It runs for one week every July at the local school. Ceòlas offers classes for both adults and children who want to learn traditional music. They also run youth music classes throughout the year. Ceòlas has a small office right next to the school building.

Places of Worship

The Church of Scotland has a large, traditional church building in Daliburgh. It was built in the 19th century and includes a hall and a manse (a house for the minister). This church is located at the main road junction near the Borrodale Hotel.

Further west, along the road, is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Peter. This church is technically in the nearby area of Cille Pheadair. Across from it is a public hall. This hall is used for many different events. These include public ceilidhs (traditional Scottish social gatherings with music and dancing), sales, and private parties.

Local Businesses

Daliburgh has several important businesses that serve the community.

Shops and Services

You can find a Post Office in Daliburgh. There's also a Co-op supermarket, where people can buy groceries. The Borrodale Hotel offers public internet access.

Other businesses include a Scottish Hydro Electric shop, the Burnside Fish and Chips takeaway, and a filling station for cars. There's also a thrift shop, which is a charity shop. It sells second-hand items and also offers tea, coffee, and food.

Accommodation and Offices

The Uist Travel Lodge and Bunkhouse opened in 2010. It includes a cafe and a gift shop. This building was originally built in the 1970s and used to be a care home.

A large office building, built with funding from Western Isles Enterprise, was empty for almost ten years. However, in 2010, it became the new offices for Stòras Uibhist. This is a special organization that is owned by the community. It manages the land in South Uist, Eriskay, and much of Benbecula.

Healthcare and Emergency Services

The Sacred Heart hospital was built in 1894. It closed in 2000 and was replaced by the new Uist and Barra Hospital in Benbecula. The old Sacred Heart hospital building has been turned into a care home for older people. It is now called Taigh a' Chridhe Uile Naomh.

This care home uses renewable energy to help the environment. It has ground source heat pumps and three wind turbines.

Near Taigh a' Chridhe Uile Naomh is the South Uist Medical Centre. Here, you can see doctors and practice nurses. There is also a pharmacy for medicines.

Daliburgh also has a fire and rescue service station. This station is staffed by volunteers who help keep the community safe. There is also a small centre for the Territorial Army.
