Dallmayr's main store in Munich

Alois Dallmayr, or just Dallmayr, is a very famous German company. It's known for being Europe's biggest fancy food (delicatessen) business. It's also one of Germany's most well-known coffee brands. The company has been around for over 300 years and is still owned by the same family.

Dallmayr has four main parts:

  • "Delicatessen and Gastronomy": This includes their famous main store in Munich, which gets about 2.8 million visitors every year!
  • "Party & Catering": They plan and provide food for big events.
  • "Coffee & Tea": This is their huge coffee and tea business.
  • "Vending & Office": They sell and operate drink and snack vending machines.

History of Dallmayr

The company started a very long time ago, in the year 1700. Back then, a merchant named Christian Reitter ran a business in Munich. This was the first version of what Dallmayr is today.

Around 1870, the business was bought by Alois Dallmayr. The company still uses his name! In 1895, he sold it to Therese and Anton Randlkofer. Therese was a very smart businesswoman for her time. Under her leadership, the main store became one of Europe's top fancy food shops. They even supplied food to many royal families!

In 1933, Dallmayr's coffee story began. A coffee expert from Bremen, Konrad Werner Wille, came to Munich. He started a special coffee department in the Dallmayr store. This coffee business became very famous, partly because of its TV ads.

The coffee part grew so much that in 1985, it became its own separate company called Alois Dallmayr Kaffee OHG. This company now handles all the "Coffee & Tea" business, which is the biggest part of Dallmayr. For a while, another big company, Nestlé, owned part of the coffee business. But in 2015, Dallmayr bought back all the shares from Nestlé. They still work together on sales, though.

Dallmayr Today

Quick Facts

Today, the main Dallmayr office is in Munich's old town. Florian Randlkofer and Wolfgang Wille are the main leaders of the company. In 2014, the Dallmayr Group made about €900 million in sales. Most of this came from "Coffee & Tea" and "Vending & Office."

The company has about 3,500 employees around the world. About 2,000 of them work in Germany. Dallmayr makes about 57,000 tonnes of roasted coffee each year. They have five coffee roasting places in Germany. The "Vending & Office" part of the company works in 14 countries in Europe and in the United Arab Emirates.

Helping the World and Being Green

Dallmayr cares about being responsible. They are part of a group that helps coffee farmers. They also support charities like the Karlheinz Böhm Stiftung Menschen für Menschen and the Jane Goodall Institute.

Some of their coffee types have special labels. These labels show that the coffee is grown in a fair way, helps the environment, or is organic. For example, for every pound of their "Ethiopia" coffee sold, Dallmayr donates five tree seedlings. This helps stop the land in Ethiopia from turning into desert. In 2011, Dallmayr even made the first vending machine that was good for the environment!

Fancy Food and Restaurants

The Main Store in Munich

"Der Dallmayr," as the main store in Munich is called, is Europe's biggest fancy food store. It has 19 different sections! You can find coffee, chocolates, wine, sausages, cheese, fresh fruit, fish, and much more.

The coffee section is the most famous, thanks to the old TV ads. Just like in the ads, they still weigh coffee with old-fashioned scales. In the middle of the shop, there's a special fountain where live crayfish wait to be sold.

Most of the food sold in the main store is made by Dallmayr itself. On the second floor, 70 chefs make gourmet salads, hot dishes, and delicious cakes. If something can't be made in the store, like smoked salmon or chocolate, it's made in Dallmayr's own factories nearby. Their chocolate factory makes over 40 tonnes of handmade chocolates every year!

Dallmayr also has a shop and café at Munich Airport. It's located after the security checks, so only people flying can visit it.

Restaurant Dallmayr

The "Dallmayr" restaurant is on the first floor of the main store. It serves modern and classic dishes and can seat up to 40 people. It opened again in 2006 and is one of only three restaurants in Munich with two Michelin stars. This means it's considered a very excellent place to eat!

Café-Bistro Dallmayr

Also on the first floor is a cozy café-bistro. It feels like a classic coffee house and has a great view of the Munich Cathedral. Here, you can enjoy French cream cakes, Dallmayr's own coffee and tea, and light lunch dishes. They also have a big breakfast menu.

Lukullusbar

Inside the store, there's also the "Lukullusbar." It's like a French market stall where you can enjoy fresh oysters and champagne.

Gifts and Online Shopping

The main store has a special area for wrapping Dallmayr items as gifts. Dallmayr also has an online shop that sends products all over the world.

Dallmayr Party & Catering

Dallmayr has a long history of providing food for special events. They used to supply food for many royal families. Today, their catering service can handle events with thousands of guests. For example, they organized the wedding of Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia in 2011.

Coffee and Tea

Dallmayr Kaffee is one of Germany's most famous coffee brands. Some of their popular coffee types are Prodomo, Classic, Crema d’Oro, and Ethiopia. They also have a special line called Grand Cru Café with rare coffees like Jamaican Blue Mountain.

Dallmayr is known for using high-quality arabica coffee beans. They get these beans from all over the world. Ethiopia is a very important supplier because that's where the arabica coffee plant first came from. Dallmayr roasts about 57,000 tonnes of coffee each year at five locations in Germany. They also own other coffee companies like Heimbs Kaffee and Azul Kaffee.

Besides coffee, Dallmayr sells over 120 different types of tea. You can find classic black and green teas, flavored teas, and special herbal teas. Dallmayr was also one of the first companies in Germany to offer "air freight" tea. This means they fly the freshest, best quality Darjeeling tea directly to Germany right after it's picked!

Vending Machines and Office Services

Under the name "Vending & Office," Dallmayr runs drink and snack vending machines. You can find them all over Germany, across Europe, and even in the Far East.

The first customer for their vending machines was the car company BMW in the 1960s. BMW put hot drink machines in their factories, and Dallmayr supplied the coffee and took care of the machines. Today, Dallmayr operates over 93,000 vending machines around the world. They say they are the biggest vending machine provider in Germany and one of the top five in Europe!
