A Look Back: Dallmayr's History
The story of Dallmayr began way back in the year 1700. A merchant named Christian Reitter had a business in Munich that was the start of what Dallmayr is today. Around 1870, the business was bought by Alois Dallmayr, and that's where the company got its name!
In 1895, Alois Dallmayr sold the business to Therese and Anton Randlkofer. Therese was a very smart businesswoman for her time. Under her leadership, the main store became one of the best fancy food shops in Europe. They even supplied food to many royal families!
The company started its coffee journey in 1933. A coffee expert from Bremen, Konrad Werner Wille, came to Munich. He created a special coffee department at Dallmayr. This coffee business became very famous, partly because of its TV ads for Dallmayr Prodomo coffee.
The coffee part of the business grew so much that in 1985, it became its own separate company called Alois Dallmayr Kaffee OHG. This is now the biggest part of the whole Dallmayr company, focusing on "Coffee & Tea."
Dallmayr Today: Facts and Figures
Today, the main office of Alois Dallmayr is in Munich's old town. Florian Randlkofer and Wolfgang Wille are the main people in charge of the company. In 2014, the Dallmayr Group made about €900 million in sales. Most of this came from their "Coffee & Tea" business.
The company has about 3,500 employees around the world, with about 2,000 of them in Germany. Dallmayr makes about 57,000 tonnes of roasted coffee each year! They have five coffee roasting places in Germany. Their "Vending & Office" part of the company works in 14 countries across Europe and in the United Arab Emirates.
Helping the World: Dallmayr's Good Deeds
Dallmayr cares about being a responsible company. They are part of groups that work for good coffee practices. They also support charities like the Karlheinz Böhm Stiftung Menschen für Menschen and the Jane Goodall Institute.
Some of their coffee types have special labels like UTZ Certified, Biosiegel (organic label), Fairtrade, and Rainforest Alliance. These labels show that the coffee is grown in a way that helps people and the environment. Also, for every pound of their "Ethiopia" coffee sold, Dallmayr donates five tree seedlings. This helps stop the land from turning into desert in Ethiopia. In 2011, Dallmayr even made the first vending machine that was good for the environment!
What Dallmayr Does: Business Areas
Fancy Food and Restaurants
The Main Store in Munich
"Der Dallmayr," as the main store in Munich is called, is the biggest fancy food shop in Europe. It has 19 different sections! You can find coffee, chocolates, wine, sausages, fruits, vegetables, fish, cheese, bread, and much more.
The coffee section is super famous because of the Prodomo TV ads. Just like in the ads, they still weigh coffee using old-fashioned scales. In the middle of the shop, there's a fountain with little cherub statues, where fresh crayfish wait to be sold.
Most of the food sold at the main store is made right there! On the second floor, there's a big kitchen where 70 chefs make gourmet salads, hot dishes, and delicious cream cakes. If something can't be made at the store, like smoked salmon or chocolate, it's made in Dallmayr's own factories nearby. Their chocolate factory makes over 40 tonnes of handmade chocolates and fruit jellies every year!
Dallmayr also has a shop at Munich Airport's Terminal 2, which opened in 2003. It even has a café! This shop is special because only air passengers with tickets can go there.
Restaurant Dallmayr
The "Dallmayr" restaurant is on the first floor of the main store. It's a fancy place that serves modern food. It can seat up to 40 people. This restaurant is one of only three in Munich that has earned two Michelin stars, which are a very high award for restaurants. The head chef is Diethard Urbansky. They have a huge list of over 700 different wines!
Café-Bistro Dallmayr
Also on the first floor, there's a cozy café-bistro. It feels like a classic coffee house and has a great view of the Munich Cathedral. Here, you can enjoy French cream cakes, Dallmayr's own coffee and tea, and classic dishes like bouillabaisse or "lobster thermidor." They also have a big breakfast menu.
Lukullusbar
Inside the store, you'll also find the "Lukullusbar." It's designed to feel like a French market. You can enjoy fresh rock oysters on ice and champagne here.
Mail Order and Gift Service
The main store has a special area for packaging gifts. Dallmayr also has an online shop where you can order their products from anywhere in the world!
Dallmayr Party & Catering
Dallmayr has a long history of providing food for special events, including for royal families. Their catering service can handle events with thousands of guests. For example, they organized the wedding of Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia and Sophie Princess of Isenburg in 2011.
Coffee and Tea
Dallmayr Kaffee is one of the most famous coffee brands in Germany. Some of their popular coffee types include Prodomo, Classic, Crema d’Oro, and Ethiopia. Since 2009, they also have a special line called Grand Cru Café, which features pure coffee varieties like Jamaican Blue Mountain and Hawaii Kona. They also supply coffee to restaurants and cafés with their Dallmayr Café & Bar line.
Dallmayr is known for using high-quality arabica coffee beans, which they get from all over the world. Ethiopia has been a very important supplier for many years, as it's where the arabica coffee plant first came from. Dallmayr roasts about 57,000 tonnes of coffee each year at five locations in Germany.
Dallmayr also offers over 120 different kinds of tea! Besides classic black and green teas, they have many flavored teas, rooibos, fruit teas, and herbal teas from South Tyrol. Dallmayr was also one of the first companies in Germany to offer "air freight" tea. This means the very first harvest of high-quality Darjeeling tea is flown directly to them after it's picked, so it's super fresh!
Vending & Office
The "Vending & Office" part of Dallmayr runs drinks and snack vending machines. You can find them all over Germany, across Europe, and even in the Far East. The first customer for their vending machines was the car company BMW in the 1960s. BMW put hot drinks vending machines in their factories, and Dallmayr supplied the coffee and took care of the machines.
Today, Dallmayr operates over 93,000 vending machines around the world! This makes them the biggest vending machine provider in Germany and one of the top five in Europe.
