Damak is a busy city in eastern Nepal. It's one of the oldest towns in the Jhapa District, located in Koshi Province. Damak is special because it sits between two rivers, the Ratuwa River to the east and the Maawa River to the west.
The city stretches from the Sivalik Hills in the north down to where the Ratuwa and Maawa rivers meet in the south. Mahendra Highway, Nepal's longest road, cuts right through the middle of Damak. With a population of 107,410 in 2021, Damak is the biggest city in the Jhapa District.

Who Lives in Damak?
Damak is home to many different people! In 2011, about 75,743 people lived here. Most people speak Nepali, but you'll also hear Limbu, Dhimal, Maithili, and Rai languages.
People from many different backgrounds live together in Damak. Some of the largest groups include Hill Brahmin, Chhetri, Limbu, Rai, and Newar.
Most people in Damak follow Hinduism. Other religions like Kirati, Buddhism, and Christianity are also practiced.
Most people in Damak can read and write, with about 82% being literate. Damak is also known for being home to many former Gurkha soldiers who served in the Nepali, Indian, and British Military.
Damak's Surroundings
Damak became a municipality (a type of city government) in 1981. Before that, it was a Village Development Committee (VDC). The municipality now has 10 wards, which are like smaller neighborhoods.
Damak is known for the large Himalayan tea estate, where tea is grown. There was even a palace built here for the former royal family of Nepal. The city covers an area of about 75 square kilometers and is located around 71 meters above sea level.
To the east of Damak is Lakhanpur. To the west, you'll find Urlabari, Rajghat, and Madhumalla. To the north is Chulachuli in Ilam, and to the south is Kohabhara.
In 2011, Damak had about 7,178 households. A large part of the city, about 55 square kilometers, is used for farming. There are also residential areas, market areas, and forest areas.
Damak is the biggest city in Koshi Province. It also has a famous cattle market called Pashuhat, located in Damak-7, which is the largest in eastern Nepal.

Damak even has its own television channel called Himshikhar Television, which broadcasts across the country. For watching movies, Damak has two single movie halls, Pathibhara Chalchitra Mandir and Damak Chalchitra Mandir, and a multiplex cinema called DMAX Cinema.
