Danny Thomas Roundfield (born May 26, 1953 – died August 6, 2012) was an amazing American professional basketball player. Standing 6 feet 8 inches tall, he played as a forward and center. People often called him "Dr. Rounds" because of his powerful playing style.
He went to Detroit's Chadsey Senior High School in 1971. In college, at Central Michigan University, he was a star player. He was even named the MAC Player of the Year in 1975! His jersey number 32 was later retired by Central Michigan to honor him.
Dan Roundfield played for 12 seasons in the top basketball leagues, the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for teams like the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, and Washington Bullets. He also played one season in Turin, Italy, for Auxilium Torino.
Roundfield was known for being a very strong rebounder and a tough defender. During his career, he was chosen for five NBA All-Defensive teams and three All-Star teams. This shows how important he was to his teams.
Professional Career Highlights
Dan Roundfield was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1975 NBA draft. However, he chose to start his career with the Indiana Pacers in the ABA. After his first year, he quickly became a key player for the Pacers.
In 1978, he joined the Atlanta Hawks. This is where he really shined! On November 21, 1978, he scored a career-high 38 points in a game. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, showing his strength under the basket.
In the 1979 NBA Playoffs, Roundfield led the Hawks to a first-round win. He averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game in that series. He was a huge force on both offense and defense.
Roundfield was selected to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star team three times in a row, from 1980 to 1982. In his first All-Star game in 1980, he scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in just 27 minutes. He almost won the MVP award for that game!
In 1984, Roundfield was traded to the Detroit Pistons. A year later, he moved to the Washington Bullets. After playing one season in Italy, he retired from basketball in 1988. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work and dedication on the court.
A True Hero
After his basketball career, Dan Roundfield lived in Atlanta. He worked for a company called Camp Dresser & McKee Inc.
In August 2012, Dan Roundfield was on vacation in Aruba. While at Baby Beach, he bravely helped his wife, Bernadine, get to safety in the water. Sadly, he drowned during this heroic act. He is remembered as a great athlete and a courageous person.
