Danese Cooper's Career
Danese Cooper has led many teams at big tech companies like Symantec and Apple Inc.. For six years, she worked at Sun Microsystems as their main supporter for open source software. She then moved to Intel to help with their open source plans.
In 2009, she was called the "Open Source Diva" at REvolution Computing. Today, she is a board member of the Open Source Hardware Association. She also helps guide Mozilla and is part of the Apache Software Foundation. In 2018, Danese joined an Irish tech company called NearForm.
What is Open Source Software?
Danese Cooper is famous for her work with open source software. This is why people gave her the nickname "Open Source Diva."
She was once asked to help make Java open source while at Sun Microsystems. At first, she left because not much was happening. But Sun Microsystems hired her back because they knew she was important for open source. Her six years there helped the company make many of its programs open source. This included their OpenOffice.org software.
Danese also joined REvolution Computing to help people learn about the R programming language. She often gives talks about open source software at big events. She even helped write a book called Open Sources 2.0: The Continuing Evolution in 2005.
Working at Wikimedia Foundation
In 2010, Danese Cooper became the chief technical officer (CTO) of the Wikimedia Foundation. This is the group that runs Wikipedia. In this role, she led the tech team and planned how to improve the technology. She also worked with volunteers to help them develop and translate software. She left the organization in July 2011.
InnerSource Work
Danese Cooper started and leads the InnerSource Commons Foundation. This group helps companies use open source ideas inside their own organizations. In 2018, she wrote a book about this topic called Adopting InnerSource.
daneseWorks Consultancy
In 2011, Danese started her own company called daneseWorks. This company helps other businesses with their open source and machine learning plans.
Danese Cooper's Personal Life
Danese Cooper went to Chadwick School for high school. She then earned her college degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. After college, she volunteered in Morocco with the Peace Corps.
She says her time in the Peace Corps made her want to travel and help people in developing countries. She believes open source software can give kids more choices and opportunities. Danese is married to a software developer. She also enjoys knitting, and sometimes knits during meetings!
