Danese Cooper is an American computer expert who helps make software available for everyone to use and change. She is known for being a big supporter of open source software.

What is Open Source Software?

Open source software is like a recipe where anyone can see the ingredients and how it's made. This means people can use the software, change it, and share their changes with others. Danese Cooper has worked hard to help companies share their software this way. Because of her efforts, she is sometimes called the "Open Source Diva."

Danese Cooper's Career

Danese Cooper has worked at many big technology companies. She managed teams at Symantec and Apple Inc.. For six years, she was the main person promoting open source at Sun Microsystems. After that, she worked on open source plans at Intel.

In 2009, she joined REvolution Computing (now Revolution Analytics) to help with open source projects. She is also a member of the board for the Open Source Hardware Association. She helps guide the Mozilla organization and is part of the Apache Software Foundation. In October 2018, Danese started working at an Irish tech company called NearForm.

Her Work with Open Source

Danese Cooper's most important work has been in the world of open source software. She was asked to help make the Java software open source while working at Sun Microsystems. At first, she was frustrated because not much was happening. But Sun Microsystems understood her passion and hired her again as their main open source officer.

Her six years at Sun Microsystems were very important. She helped the company open up its software, including programs like OpenOffice.org and Oracle Grid Engine. She also helped people learn about the R programming language. Danese has given many talks about open source, sharing her knowledge at events around the world. In 2005, she helped write a book called Open Sources 2.0: The Continuing Evolution.

Wikimedia Foundation Role

In February 2010, Danese Cooper became the chief technical officer for the Wikimedia Foundation. This is the organization that runs Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects. In this role, she led the technical team and helped plan how the Foundation's technology would grow. She also worked with volunteers to improve and translate the software. She left the Wikimedia Foundation in July 2011.

InnerSource and daneseWorks

Danese Cooper started and leads the InnerSource Commons Foundation. This group helps companies use open source ideas inside their own organizations. In 2018, she co-wrote a book called Adopting InnerSource.

In June 2011, Danese started her own company called daneseWorks. This company helps other businesses with their open source and machine learning plans.

Danese Cooper's Life

Danese Cooper went to Chadwick School for high school and then studied at the University of California, Los Angeles. After college, she volunteered in Morocco with the Peace Corps. She says her time in the Peace Corps made her want to travel and help people in developing countries. She believes open source software can give kids more opportunities.

Danese is married to another software developer. She enjoys knitting, and sometimes she even knits during meetings!
