Who Was Daniel Carter Beard?

Daniel Carter Beard was born in Cincinnati in 1850. When he was eleven years old, his family moved to this house in Covington, Kentucky. He spent his childhood here, exploring and learning about nature.

Growing Up in Covington

As a boy, Daniel loved hearing stories about famous frontiersmen like Daniel Boone. He admired Boone so much that he and his friends started their own group. They called themselves the "Boone Scouts." They tried to be like Boone, even sneaking past soldiers during the Civil War!

These childhood adventures helped Daniel prepare for his future. He loved camping, making things with his hands, and being in nature. These were all skills that would become important for the Boy Scouts.

Daniel left Covington for college. After he graduated, he moved to New York City. His family later joined him there in 1878.

A Special Landmark

Daniel Carter Beard visited Covington one last time in 1934. A big parade was held in his honor. Scouts from Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia came to show how much they appreciated him.

His boyhood home was officially named a National Historic Landmark in 1966. At that time, William Booth Memorial Hospital owned the building. They used it as a nursing school and a place for nursing students to live. The hospital is still located near the home. Today, the Daniel Carter Beard Boyhood Home is a private residence.
