Danish Prabhashankarbhai Kaneria (Urdu: دانش پربھا شنکر کنیریا; Urdu pronunciation: [d̪ɑːn̪ɪʃ kəneːɾijɑː]), born on December 16, 1980, is a former Pakistani cricketer. He played for the Pakistan national cricket team from 2000 to 2010. Danish was a right-arm leg spinner who could also bowl a googly.

He played 61 Test matches for Pakistan and took 261 wickets. This made him one of Pakistan's top bowlers. Danish was also special because he was the second Hindu player to represent Pakistan in international cricket. His cousin, Anil Dalpat, was the first.

Later in his career, Danish faced serious issues related to cricket rules. This led to him being unable to play professionally. He tried to appeal this decision, but it was upheld.

Danish also played in 18 One Day International (ODI) matches. He took 15 wickets in these games. He never played Twenty20 International (T20I) matches for Pakistan. Throughout his career, he played many first-class, List A, and Twenty20 matches. He also played for Essex County Cricket Club in England.

Early Life and Cricket Beginnings

Danish was born in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, on December 16, 1980. His parents are Prabhashankarbhai Laljibhai Kaneria and Babita Prabhashankarbhai Kaneria. People often called him "Danny" or "Nani-Danny."

He went to school at the Government Islamia College in Karachi. Danish is a Hindu and comes from the Gujarati community. His family moved to Karachi from Surat over a hundred years ago. After his cousin, Anil Dalpat, Danish became the second Hindu to play for Pakistan. He also attended St. Patrick's High School, Karachi.

Cricket Career

Playing for Teams in Pakistan

Danish Kaneria played for many different teams in Pakistan. These included National Shipping Corporation and Habib Bank Limited cricket team (HBL). He started his first-class career in 1998–99.

He played 206 first-class matches until 2011–12. In these matches, he took an amazing 1,024 wickets. He often took five wickets or more in an innings, doing so 71 times. He also took ten or more wickets in a match 12 times. His best bowling in a single innings was eight wickets for 59 runs. As a batsman, he scored 1,918 runs, with his highest score being 65 runs.

Danish also played 167 List A matches. He took 262 wickets in these games. His best performance was seven wickets for 39 runs. He scored 379 runs in List A cricket, including one half-century. He also played 65 Twenty20 matches, taking 87 wickets. His best T20 bowling was four wickets for 22 runs.

Playing for Pakistan in Test Matches

Danish made his international debut in November 2000. He was 19 years old when he played his first Test match against England in Faisalabad. In 2001–02, he had a fantastic game against Bangladesh. He took 12 wickets for 94 runs, which helped Pakistan win and earned him the "man of the match" award. This was his best performance in a Test match.

Later, against Bangladesh in Dhaka, he took seven wickets for 77 runs. In 2003–04, he helped Pakistan win against South Africa by taking seven wickets for 111 runs. He was again named "man of the match."

In October 2004, he took ten wickets against Sri Lanka in Karachi. He bowled 60 overs in that innings, which was a huge effort. In January 2005, he took eight wickets against Australia. Even though Pakistan lost, Australian cricket legend Shane Warne praised his bowling. During this match, Danish reached his 100th Test wicket. The BBC once called him a "match-winner with his leg-breaks."

Danish played an important role in Pakistan's Test wins against teams like West Indies, England, and India. In December 2009, he took seven wickets against New Zealand.

He played his last Test match against England in July 2010. His Test career lasted almost ten years. He took 261 wickets in 61 matches. He took five wickets in an innings 15 times. Danish holds the record for the most wickets by any Pakistani spin bowler in Test cricket. He is also the fourth highest wicket-taker for Pakistan in Test cricket, after Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Imran Khan.

Playing for Pakistan in One Day Matches

Danish Kaneria played his first One Day International (ODI) match in October 2001 against Zimbabwe. He played 18 ODIs for Pakistan in total. In these matches, he took 15 wickets. His best bowling in an ODI was three wickets for 31 runs against New Zealand in 2003.

He was part of the Pakistan team for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. He played two matches in that tournament. His last ODI appearance was in March 2007. Pakistan often chose other spin bowlers like Shahid Afridi or Saeed Ajmal for ODI matches.

Playing Cricket in England

Danish also played county cricket in England for Essex County Cricket Club from 2004 to 2010. He did very well there, taking 32 wickets in seven matches in 2005. In 2007, he took 107 wickets for Essex across all types of games. In 2008, he broke a finger while playing for Essex, which ended his season early.

Personal Life

Danish Kaneria is a Hindu and belongs to the Gujarati community. He is married to Dharmita Kaneria. They have two children together. His cousin, Anil Dalpat, was also a famous Pakistani cricketer.
