Danté Exum (born 13 July 1995) is an Australian professional basketball player. He plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Instead of going to college, he decided to join the NBA draft. The Utah Jazz picked him as the fifth player overall in the 2014 NBA draft.

Exum has also played for the Australian national team. He won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Danté Exum's Early Life and Basketball Journey

Danté Exum was born in East Melbourne, Australia. His parents were from America. He started playing basketball for the Keilor Thunder when he was young. He also played Australian rules football at school.

He went to Thomas Carr College in Melbourne. Later, he moved to Canberra to study at the Australian Institute of Sport. He also attended Lake Ginninderra Secondary College. In 2013, he helped Lake Ginninderra win the Australian National High School Basketball Championships.

In April 2013, Exum played in the Nike Hoop Summit. He was part of the World Select Team. He scored 16 points and helped his team win against the USA Junior Select Team.

After finishing high school in Australia in October 2013, Exum could have played college basketball. But he chose not to. In January 2014, he announced he would enter the 2014 NBA draft.

Playing in the NBA: Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz picked Exum as the fifth player in the 2014 NBA draft. He played his first NBA game on 29 October 2014. He scored five points in that game.

On 22 January, he scored his highest points in a game so far, with 15 points. He made five three-pointers in that game. On 1 April, he made a career-high 12 assists. As a rookie, he played in all 82 games and started in 41 of them. He averaged about 4.8 points per game. He was one of only 10 rookies in Jazz history to play in all 82 games. He was chosen to play in the 2015 Rising Stars Challenge during the NBA All-Star Weekend.

In August 2015, Exum got a serious knee injury while playing for Australia. He had surgery and missed the entire 2015–16 season.

He returned to play in the 2016–17 season. On 11 March, he scored a new career-high of 22 points.

In October 2017, Exum had shoulder surgery. He played his first game of that season on 15 March 2018. On 30 March 2018, he scored 21 points, which was his season high.

Exum signed again with the Jazz on 6 July 2018. On 27 December 2018, he scored 20 points. Two days later, he had 13 points and a career-high 13 assists. He later had to miss games because of an ankle sprain and then a knee injury.

Moving Teams: Cleveland Cavaliers and Beyond

On 24 December 2019, Exum was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played for them for a while.

In January 2021, he was part of a big trade that sent James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. Exum was traded to the Houston Rockets. However, he did not play in any regular season games for the Rockets. He was later waived by them in October 2021.

Playing Overseas: Barcelona and Partizan

On 7 December 2021, Exum signed with FC Barcelona, a famous team in Spain. He played for them in the Liga ACB and the EuroLeague.

On 10 July 2022, Exum signed with Partizan NIS Belgrade in Serbia. This team also plays in the ABA League and the EuroLeague. During the 2022–23 season, Partizan won the ABA League championship. Exum averaged 13.2 points per game for Partizan.

Back to the NBA: Dallas Mavericks

On 14 July 2023, Exum signed with the Dallas Mavericks, bringing him back to the NBA. He played his first game for the Mavericks on 25 October 2023. On 12 December 2023, Exum scored a season-high 26 points. He also made a career-high seven three-pointers in that game. Exum helped the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals, where they played against the Boston Celtics.

Representing Australia: Olympic Medals

Exum has played for Australia's junior national team. He played in the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Cup and the 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. He was named to the All-Tournament Team in both events.

In 2013, he made his debut for the senior national team. He played against New Zealand. In 2014, he played for Australia in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Exum was chosen to play for the Australian basketball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the bronze medal game, he played a key role. He helped Australia win their first-ever Olympic medal in men's basketball, a bronze.

Danté Exum's Family and Interests

Danté Exum has an older brother named Jamaar and a twin sister named Tierra. His father, Cecil, also played college basketball. He played for the University of North Carolina and won a championship in 1982. That team included famous players like Michael Jordan. Danté's mother also went to North Carolina.

Cecil Exum was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1984. He later moved to Australia and played in the National Basketball League.

Danté Exum is a big fan of the Essendon Football Club. This is an Australian rules football team. He even wore shoes inspired by Essendon during the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend.
