History of Danville
Danville was first settled and planned out in 1834. It was named after a place called Danville, Virginia. This was because one of the first people to settle here came from that Virginia town.
A post office opened in Danville in 1834. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open until 1942.
Geography and Location
Danville is located in the western part of Montgomery County. It sits just north of a major highway, Interstate 70, which is also known as U.S. Route 40 here. You can get to Danville from Exit 170, which leads to Missouri Route 161.
Interstate 70 goes west about 45 miles (72 km) to Columbia. It goes east about 80 miles (129 km) to St. Louis. Route 161 goes north about 5 miles (8 km) to Montgomery City.
Local Businesses and Surroundings
Even though it's a small community, Danville has a few places. Right off the interstate, there's a building that combines a gas station, a food store, a lunch counter, and even a flower shop! In the main part of the community, you can find a place to get your car fixed. There's also a quarry nearby, which is a place where rocks are dug out of the ground. Other than these, there are no other businesses or services directly in Danville.
Land and Water
The Danville area covers about 0.38 square miles (0.98 square kilometers) of land. A very small part, about 0.006 square miles (0.016 square kilometers), is water.
The community is built on a raised area of land, like a small hill. Water from this area flows in two directions. To the north, it drains into Rumbo Branch. To the south, it drains into Sallee Branch. Both of these are small streams that flow west. They eventually join the Loutre River. The Loutre River then flows into the Missouri River, which is a very large river. This whole system of rivers and streams is called the Missouri River watershed.
