Daphne Etta Reid (born Maxwell on July 13, 1948) is an American actress, comedian, designer, and former model. She is best known for her role as the second Vivian Banks on the popular NBC TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air from 1993 to 1996.

Daphne Maxwell Reid's Early Life
Daphne Maxwell Reid was born in New York City. She went to The Bronx High School of Science, a special school known for its focus on science. She later earned a degree in interior design and architecture from Northwestern University. She attended Northwestern on a scholarship. While there, she made history by becoming the first African-American woman to be named the university's homecoming queen.
Starting Her Career as a Model
While at Northwestern, Daphne began her modeling career. She eventually signed with the famous Eileen Ford modeling agency. She also became the first African-American woman to be featured on the cover of Glamour magazine.
Daphne Maxwell Reid's Acting Career
Daphne Maxwell Reid has appeared in many television programs. Her most famous role was playing Vivian Banks on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She took over the role from Janet Hubert-Whitten in 1993 and stayed with the show until it ended in 1996. She joined the show during Season 3, right after the fictional character Nicky Banks was born.
Other TV Shows and Roles
Before The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Daphne starred in several other TV series. These included Simon & Simon, Frank’s Place, and Snoops.
She also had a recurring role as Frances Hunter, JT's mother, on the UPN sitcom Eve. Later, she played Juanita Lawrence on the BET sitcom Let's Stay Together.
In 2022, she made a special guest appearance in Bel-Air. This show is a new, dramatic version of Fresh Prince. She played a character named Helen, who was on an Art Council board.
Beyond Acting
Besides acting, Daphne Reid is also a talented photographer. She is also a designer and creates her own clothing.
Daphne Maxwell Reid's Personal Life

In 1968, while she was still in college, Daphne Maxwell married Robert Tubbs. They had one son named Chris. They later divorced in 1979.
In 1982, she married actor Tim Reid. When they married, she became a stepmother to his two children. Daphne and Tim Reid owned and ran New Millennium Studios together in Petersburg, Virginia. They operated the studios until 2014.
Daphne also served on the board of visitors at Virginia State University for eight years. She was appointed to this important role in July 2008.
On July 31, 2010, she became an honorary member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. This happened during their 50th national convention in New Orleans.
