Darío Ramón Vivas Velasco (born June 12, 1950 – died August 13, 2020) was an important politician from Venezuela. He was a member of the National Constituent Assembly in 2017. He also served as the Governor of the Capital District. Before that, he was a representative (called a deputy) in the National Assembly for the Capital District for many years. He was even the first vice president of the National Assembly twice.

Darío Vivas's Journey in Politics
Darío Vivas started his political journey with a group called the Fifth Republic Movement (MVR). He was in charge of tours and events for this group. In 2006, the MVR changed its name to the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). Darío Vivas kept the same important role in the new party.
He served as a deputy in Venezuela's National Assembly for two terms. This was from 2010 until the middle of 2017. He then left his position to run in another election. On July 30, 2017, he was chosen to be a member of the National Constituent Assembly.
Laws Darío Vivas Helped Create
As a deputy in the National Assembly, Darío Vivas helped create and change several laws. These laws were important for how Venezuela worked. Some of the laws he supported included:
- Changes to how elections are run (in 2009).
- Updates to the law about community councils (in 2009).
- Creating a new system for the Metropolitan Area of the Capital District (in 2009).
- A special law for the Capital District (in 2009).
- The budget law for the Capital District (in 2009).
- A law to protect people who have mortgage debts (in 2007).
Sad News: Darío Vivas's Death
During the COVID-19 pandemic in Venezuela, Darío Vivas shared that he had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. This was on July 19, 2020. Sadly, he passed away from the virus on August 13, 2020, when he was 70 years old.
International Actions Against Darío Vivas

Actions by the United States
On August 9, 2017, the United States Department of the Treasury placed sanctions on Darío Vivas. This was because of his role in Venezuela's Constituent Assembly.

On March 29, 2018, the government of Panama also put sanctions on Darío Vivas. They stated concerns about his possible involvement in certain financial activities.
Actions by Canada
After the 2018 Venezuelan presidential election in May 2018, Canada placed sanctions on 14 Venezuelan politicians, including Darío Vivas. Canada stated that the situation in Venezuela was getting worse. They also said the 2018 presidential election was not fair or democratic. Darío Vivas was sanctioned along with other members of the Constituent Assembly and the Supreme Court.
