Darío de Regoyos y Valdés (born November 1, 1857 – died October 29, 1913) was a Spanish painter. He is known for helping to update and improve modern Spanish painting.

Darío studied art in Madrid and later in Brussels, Belgium. He traveled a lot in the 1880s, often with his friend, the painter Adolfo Guiard. He was part of important art groups like L'Essor and a founder of Les XX. Through these experiences, he was greatly influenced by Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism art styles.

Some of his famous paintings include El paseo de Alderdi Eder (1894) and La España Negra: Víctimas de la fiesta (1894). His art was not very popular when he was alive. However, after he died, a special exhibition honored him in Madrid. You can see his paintings in museums in Bilbao, Barcelona, Vallès Oriental, and Málaga. He passed away in 1913 and was buried in Sant Gervasi Cemetery in Barcelona.

Early Life and Education

Darío de Regoyos was born in Ribadesella, Spain. His father, Darío Regoyos Morenillo, was an architect. When Darío was young, his family moved to Madrid.

In 1878, he joined the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando to study art. His teacher was Belgian artist Carlos de Haes. The next year, Darío visited Brussels in Belgium. He followed his teacher's advice and went with friends Enrique Fernández Arbós and Isaac Albéniz. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts and lived in Brussels for ten years. There, a man named Edmond Picard helped him, introducing him to the busy art scene in the city.

Artistic Career

From 1881 to 1893, Darío traveled often between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. In 1882, he went to Morocco and Spain with fellow painters Théo van Rysselberghe and Frantz Charlet. He also made several trips to Paris in the 1880s with his friend, Adolfo Guiard.

These travels helped him learn a lot from Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism painters. He worked to promote modern art in Belgium by organizing exhibitions and concerts. He became a member of the art group L'Essor and helped start Les XX. He met famous artists like Pissarro, Seurat, and Signac.

One time, a writer named José Ortega y Gasset joked that Regoyos "seemed to kneel to paint a cabbage" about his 1912 painting, Le Poulailler ("The Henhouse"). Darío also painted several pictures of smoking trains. In 1883, he toured Spain with other painters and settled there the next year. He got married in Spain in 1895 but kept traveling outside the country.

Darío de Regoyos died from cancer in Barcelona in 1913. Even though his art wasn't very popular during his life, a special exhibition honored him after his death. This show was held at the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid. His paintings are now in several museums, including the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga.

Today, there are streets named after him in cities like Oviedo, Ribadesella, and Bilbao. In 2008, Spain even released a 0.43€ stamp with his self-portrait on it.

Art Style

When Darío de Regoyos first started painting, his style changed. He moved from Naturalism, which shows things as they are, towards early symbolism. An example of this is his series called The black Spain. Later, he adopted Impressionism and Pointillism. Impressionism uses small, thin brushstrokes to show light and movement. Pointillism uses tiny dots of color.

In his later years, he painted many landscapes outdoors, known as en plein air paintings. These often showed places in Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa in Spain. His drawings were sometimes simple, almost childlike. However, his use of color was very modern and unique for Spain at the time. He is well-known for bringing Impressionism to Spain and helping to modernize Spanish painting.
