Early Life and Family
Darius B. Warner was born in 1832. Not much is known about his early childhood. He later married Nancy Robinson. Their wedding took place in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on June 7, 1856. His family, the Warners, had roots in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and also in Dublin, Ireland.
A Soldier in the Civil War
The American Civil War was a big conflict in the United States. It happened between 1861 and 1865. Darius B. Warner joined the Union Army, which was the army fighting for the northern states. In 1863, he held the rank of lieutenant colonel. He bravely led a group of soldiers called the 113th Ohio Infantry. They fought in a very important battle known as the Battle of Chickamauga. This battle was one of the bloodiest of the war.
Recognition After the War
After the Civil War ended, Darius Warner received special recognition for his service. On April 3, 1866, President Andrew Johnson decided to honor him. The President nominated Warner to become a "brevet" brigadier general. A "brevet" rank means it's an honorary title. It's given to recognize brave service, but it doesn't always come with the pay or command of a full general. The United States Senate agreed with the President's choice. They confirmed his appointment on April 26, 1866. This promotion was a way to thank him for his dedication and leadership during the war.
