Darryl Anthony Tapp was born on September 13, 1984. He is an American football coach and a former player. Darryl Tapp used to play as a defensive end. He is currently the defensive line coach for the Washington Commanders.
Tapp played college football for the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Seattle Seahawks picked him in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft. He also played for other teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2018, he started his coaching career.

Early Life and High School Football
Darryl Tapp grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia. He went to Deep Creek High School. There, he was a talented athlete, playing football, basketball, and track and field.
In his senior year, Tapp set a school record with 15 sacks. A sack is when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. He also made 89 tackles. He was named Second-team All-State for his great performance.
During his three years on the varsity football team, Tapp helped Deep Creek achieve an impressive 34–4 record. He had 22 sacks in total during his high school career. In 2000, he was one of only three juniors to start on both offense and defense. He played in all 14 games that year and earned First-team All-District honors.
College Career at Virginia Tech
Darryl Tapp started playing for Virginia Tech in 2002 as a freshman. He mostly played on special teams. In a game against Virginia, he scored his first college touchdown. He returned a blocked punt for a score.
During his time at Virginia Tech, Tapp was known for his strength. He set a record for defensive ends with a 660-pound back squat. He also had a 415-pound bench press.
In 2003, he made 58 tackles and had three sacks. He also hurried the quarterback 17 times. In 2004, Tapp became a starter. He played in all 13 games and made 60 tackles. He had 8.5 sacks and was named First-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference.
In his senior year in 2005, he started all thirteen games again. He made 48 tackles and 10 sacks. He was named first-team All-ACC for the second time. In 2018, Darryl Tapp was honored by being inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
Professional Football Career
Darryl Tapp was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2006 NFL Draft. He was the 63rd player picked overall.
Seattle Seahawks (2006–2009)
As a new player, or "rookie," Tapp played on special teams. He also rotated in as a defensive end. He made 33 tackles, three sacks, and even scored a touchdown.
In 2007, Tapp started all 16 games for the Seahawks. He had 49 tackles and seven sacks that season. On October 21, 2007, he had his best game with four sacks and a forced fumble against the St. Louis Rams.
Philadelphia Eagles (2010–2012)
In 2010, the Seahawks traded Tapp to the Philadelphia Eagles. He signed a three-year contract with the Eagles. On September 26, 2010, he got his first sack as an Eagle. He tackled Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. In the playoffs on January 9, 2011, Tapp recorded his first-ever playoff sack against Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Washington Redskins (2013)
On March 28, 2013, Tapp signed a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins. He recorded his first sack for the Redskins on September 29, 2013. He tackled Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn.
Detroit Lions (2014–2015)
Tapp signed with the Detroit Lions in 2014. He was released later that year but re-signed with them in 2015. In 2015, he received an award called the Media-Friendly Good Guy Award from the Detroit Lions.
New Orleans Saints (2016–2017)
In 2016, Tapp joined the New Orleans Saints. He was released and re-signed a few times during his time with the team.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2017)
Tapp signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 25, 2017. He was released by the Buccaneers about a month later.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Darryl Tapp began coaching. On December 13, 2019, he returned to Virginia Tech as a co-defensive line coach.
On February 11, 2021, he joined the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant defensive line coach. On February 15, 2024, Tapp was hired as the defensive line coach for the Washington Commanders.
Personal Life
Darryl Tapp has been good friends with former NFL defensive back DeAngelo Hall since they were kids. They went to the same schools from elementary school all the way through college and were even teammates.
