Darryl Anthony Tapp (born September 13, 1984) is an American football coach and former player. He used to play as a defensive end. Today, he is the defensive line coach for the Washington Commanders.

Darryl Tapp played college football for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He was picked by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2006 NFL draft. He also played for several other teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. After his playing career, Tapp started coaching in 2018.

Early Life and High School Football

Darryl Tapp grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia. He went to Deep Creek High School. There, he was a star athlete in football, basketball, and track and field.

In his final year of high school, Tapp set a school record. He made 15 sacks, which is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback. He also had 89 tackles in total. He was named Second-team All-State for his amazing performance.

During his three years on the varsity team, Tapp helped Deep Creek High School achieve a great record of 34 wins and only 4 losses. He recorded 22 sacks throughout his high school career.

College Career at Virginia Tech

Tapp started playing for Virginia Tech in 2002. As a freshman, he mostly played on special teams. In one game against Virginia, he scored his first college touchdown. He returned a blocked punt for the score.

Tapp was known for his strength. He set a record for defensive ends with a 660-pound back squat. He also had a 415-pound bench press. These numbers show how strong he was.

In 2004, Tapp became a starter for Virginia Tech. He played in all 13 games. He made 60 tackles and had 8.5 sacks. He was named First-team All-ACC. In 2005, his senior year, he was again a first-team All-ACC player. He had 10 sacks that season.

In 2018, Darryl Tapp was honored for his college achievements. He was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Professional Football Journey

Darryl Tapp was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft. He was the 63rd player picked overall.

Seattle Seahawks (2006–2009)

As a new player, or rookie, Tapp played on special teams. He also rotated in as a defensive end. In his first year, he had 33 tackles and three sacks. He even scored a touchdown after getting an interception.

In 2007, Tapp started all 16 games for the Seahawks. He had 49 tackles and seven sacks. In one game, he had four sacks and forced a fumble. This was his best game for sacks.

Philadelphia Eagles (2010–2012)

In 2010, Tapp was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. He signed a three-year contract with them. In his first season with the Eagles, he recorded his first sack for the team. He also got his first-ever sack in a playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.

Washington Redskins (2013)

Tapp signed a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins in 2013. He recorded his first sack as a Redskin in September of that year.

Detroit Lions (2014–2015)

In 2014, Tapp joined the Detroit Lions. He was released before the season but re-signed with them in 2015. That year, he won an award called the "Media-Friendly Good Guy Award." This award recognized him for being good with the media.

New Orleans Saints (2016–2017)

Tapp signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2016. He was released and re-signed a few times during his time there.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2017)

In October 2017, Tapp signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played a few games before being released in November.

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Darryl Tapp began coaching. In 2019, he returned to his old college, Virginia Tech. He became a co-defensive line coach there.

In 2021, he joined the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant defensive line coach. Then, in 2024, Tapp was hired as the defensive line coach for the Washington Commanders. This is the same team he played for when they were called the Redskins.

Personal Life

Darryl Tapp has been close friends with former NFL player DeAngelo Hall since they were kids. They went to the same schools from elementary all the way through college. They were even teammates at times.
