Early Life
Farrell was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. When he was five, his family moved to Mission Viejo, California. In high school, his mother taught him how to play the guitar. He also played the violin during his high school years. Farrell went to UCLA. There, he shared a room with Brad Delson, who would later become his bandmate. He earned a degree in philosophy from UCLA.
Career
Tasty Snax
While in high school, Farrell joined a Christian ska punk band. They were first called Tasty Snax, then later changed their name to The Snax. Farrell switched from playing electric guitar to bass guitar for the band. This was to fit the band's needs. His college friend, Mark Fiore, was also in the band. Fiore later helped make many video albums for Linkin Park. Tasty Snax released two studio albums and one collection album. They signed with Screaming Giant Records. Farrell left the band in 2000.
Linkin Park
Farrell joined Xero, which was the first version of Linkin Park. He met Brad Delson at UCLA. He helped create the band's first demo tape in 1997. However, he then left the group to go on tour with Tasty Snax. While he was away, other musicians filled in for him. They helped with Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park's first album.
Farrell came back to Linkin Park in 2000 after being away for a year. He has been the band's bassist for six of their seven studio albums. On the 2002 album Reanimation, he played the violin and cello. This was for the song "Krwlng," which is a remixed version of "Crawling." Along with Delson and Rob Bourdon, he also helped manage the band's business.
Linkin Park took a break after Chester Bennington passed away in 2017. Farrell chose not to speak at Bennington's memorial service. He felt he could not express his feelings with words. Linkin Park returned after seven years in 2024. They announced a new album, From Zero, and a new tour.
Personal Life
In 2008, Farrell said his political views were "all over the place." He agreed with some ideas from the Democratic Party. He also agreed with many ideas from the Republican Party. Farrell loves to play golf. He is also a big fan of association football (soccer). He supports the LA Galaxy team and used to have season tickets. He has a podcast with his best friend, professional golfer Brendan Steele. Mark Fiore, Linkin Park's videographer, also joins them.
