History of Davenport
Davenport was first planned out in 1872 by the Nebraska Land and Town Company. Around the same time, a railroad line was built through the area. This railroad was first called the St. Joseph and Denver City line, but later became part of the Union Pacific. The village was named after Davenport, Iowa.
In 1887, Davenport officially became an incorporated village. This means it gained its own local government. Another railroad line, the North Western Railroad, also came through the village in 1888. Having two railroads with passenger and freight services helped Davenport's businesses grow. It even supported several hotels.
The first public school in Davenport opened in 1877. Different religious groups also started churches:
- A Methodist church began in 1881.
- A Church of Christ started in 1882.
- Christ's Lutheran Church was founded in 1892.
- St. Peter's Lutheran Church opened in 1912.
Sadly, large parts of the business area in Davenport were destroyed by major fires in 1889, 1917, and 2011.
