History of Davenport
How Davenport Started
Davenport became its own suburb on July 8, 2014. Before that, its land was part of the suburbs of Port Augusta and Wami Kata. This change happened because the Davenport Community Council asked for it. This council represents the Aboriginal community living in the area.
The names of the roads and the numbers for properties in Davenport were officially approved in October 2014. This was done by the local council, the City of Port Augusta.
The Umeewarra Mission
The land in Davenport, and the nearby suburb of Wami Kata, has an important history. It was once home to the Umeewarra Mission. This mission was run by a religious group from 1937 to 1964. It had a school and a home for children.
In 1964, the South Australian government took over the mission. At that time, the area was renamed the Davenport Reserve. In 1968, the Davenport Community Council took charge of running the reserve. The children's home at the mission closed in 1995.
Life in Davenport
What the Land is Used For
Most of the land in Davenport is used for homes. However, the rules for the area also allow for other things. These include places for fun activities, small businesses, and community buildings. These uses are meant to fit in with the history of the community living there.
Davenport is also home to the Wami Kata Old Folks Home. This is a special place that provides care for older people. There was also the old Umeewarra Mission building. In 2014, there were plans to pull it down, even though some people who used to live there wanted it to stay.
Population and Community
In August 2016, a count of people was done, called the 2016 Australian census. This count showed that Davenport, along with a small part of Port Augusta, had 163 people living there. A very large number of these people, 98.1%, identified as being "Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people." This shows that Davenport is a very important place for the Aboriginal community.
Government and Location
Davenport is part of different government areas. For federal elections, it is in the Division of Grey. For state elections in South Australia, it is in the Electoral district of Stuart. For local government, it is part of the City of Port Augusta.
