Wami Kata is a suburb located in the northern part of South Australia. It's part of the City of Port Augusta, a local government area. This area is known as the Far North region.

What's in a Name?
Wami Kata got its name and official boundaries in February 1994. The name comes from an Aboriginal community. In the Pitjantjatjara language, "Wami Kata" means "head of the snake."
How Wami Kata's Borders Changed
Over the years, the size and shape of Wami Kata have changed a bit.
- In 2013, a part of Wami Kata was separated. This piece became part of a new area called Emeroo.
- In 2014, another section was taken from Wami Kata. This part, along with some land from nearby Port Augusta, helped create a new suburb called Davenport.
- Because of these changes, the Wami Kata Old Folks Home is now located within the suburb of Davenport.

Wami Kata is home to an interesting historical place.
The Emeroo Station Ostrich Farm
Most of the old Emeroo Station Ostrich Farm is located within Wami Kata. A small part of it is also on the border with Emeroo. This farm is very important because it's listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it's a special place that helps tell the story of South Australia's past.
Transport and Local Areas
Even though Wami Kata has important transport routes nearby, they don't stop within its borders.
Railways Near Wami Kata
- The Trans-Australian Railway runs along the western edge of Wami Kata. This railway connects different parts of Australia. However, trains on this line have never stopped within Wami Kata's current boundaries.
- The Marree railway line is also close to Wami Kata, near its eastern side.
Hutley Estate Subdivision
Within Wami Kata, you'll find a residential area known as the Hutley Estate subdivision. This is where homes and streets are planned out for people to live.
