Davi Samuel Alcolumbre Tobelem was born on June 19, 1977. He is a Brazilian politician and a member of the Brazil Union (UNIÃO) party. He currently serves as a Senator for the state of Amapá. From 2019 to 2021, he was the President of the Federal Senate and also the President of the National Congress of Brazil.
Davi Alcolumbre has family roots from Morocco. He made history as the first person of Jewish faith to become the President of the Senate in Brazil.

Davi Alcolumbre's Life Story
Davi Alcolumbre was born in Macapá, Brazil, in 1977. His parents were Samuel José Tobelem and Julia Peres Alcolumbre. His family has Sephardic Jewish origins. They moved from Morocco to Brazil, first settling in the state of Pará.
His grandparents on his father's side, José Tobelem and Maey Alcolumbre Tobelem, were both born in Morocco. His mother's father, Isaac Alcolumbre, was born in Belém, Brazil. Isaac's parents were Moroccan immigrants from Tangier.
Early Steps in Politics
Davi Alcolumbre began his political career as a City Councillor in Macapá. He served in this role from 2001 to 2003. At that time, he was a member of the Democratic Labor Party (PDT).
In 2002, he was elected as a Federal Deputy for the state of Amapá. He was re-elected twice, serving in this position until 2015. Later, he joined the Democrats party, where he was part of the national leadership and its youth group.
Becoming a Senator
In the 2014 elections, Davi Alcolumbre ran for a seat in the Senate. He won the election with 36.26% of the votes. He officially took office as a Senator on February 1, 2015.
In 2015, his fellow Senators chose him to be the Chair of the Senate Regional Development and Tourism Committee. This committee focuses on improving different regions and promoting tourism in Brazil.
Leading the Senate
In 2019, Davi Alcolumbre was the only member from the previous Senate leadership team. On February 1, he worked to lead the session that would choose the new President of the Senate.
On February 2, Davi Alcolumbre was elected the new President of the Federal Senate. He won in the first round with 42 votes. He received support from Senators who did not want his main rival to win, as well as from some who supported President Jair Bolsonaro.
On March 18, 2020, Davi Alcolumbre announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19.
